I read an article in an issue of CTC Magazine where they interviewed a retired engineer & he stated "the SD40-2 was as close to perfect as they (locomotives) ever got."

The SD40-2 is generally considered to be the best locomotive of all time for obvious reasons.

The "snoot" SD40-2's were equipped with equipment for radio control for helper duty in the short hood, it was not for appearance sake.

SD 40s still can be seen daily operating on dozens of regional railroads and short lines.

Classic locomotive. My personal favorite is the spartan cab CN SD40.

I like the sound of an SD40-2 in run 8.

I grew up next to the north/south Conrail Big 4 mainline from Anderson Indiana to Elkhart yards and loved the Big
Blue SD40-2S, thanks for the video!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Quebec North Shore & Labrador ran SD40s on its passenger trains between Sept Iles and Schefferville through western Labrador.
Most exotic place with SD40s: Mauritania, west Africa, its iron ore railroad with limited passenger service. Fitted with big sand filters for desert operations.

The SDP 40 F had a large water tank with no baffles in these tanks. Ask any mariner about free surface effect. When the movement of these fluids reaches a stage of synchronisation, you have problems, big ones. That water tank, set up high, and half full, there's the perfect recipe for free surface effect. Throw a bend into the mix, and you have a locomotive that WILL fall over, guaranteed. The energy stored in 1 ton of water is a very frightening thing. I know, having spent 35 years working at sea.

Max Ephraim Jr. was the man responsible for both turbocharging EMD engines, and for the SD 40 and SD 40-2, which pioneered electronic controls in the form of individual cards that were easier to troubleshoot. Here's a bit of information on Max; I can remember his obituary in the Chicago Tribune.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Ephraim_Jr
