Somebody measured this ground before anyone agreed it could hold. A tunnel bored under a strait. A dam that moved a river. A bridge with a span nobody had built before and no proof it would stand. This channel is about what it actually took to put those there — the survey, the arguments, the money, the twenty years between the first drawing and the first day anyone crossed. I'm Eleanor. I spent thirty years doing field survey work, which means I was usually on site before the site existed. Empty ground, a set of instruments, and a number that somebody else was going to build on.
