  &quot;RED SHIRT&quot;, a college athlete has 4 years of eligibility . &nbsp;But you can get an extra 5th year or &quot;red shirt&quot; year. During a red shirt year you only practice. &nbsp;You do not participate in games . So it is used to develop young players or to rehab from injury if you haven&apos;t used it yet.<br>Only College football allows you to participate in up to 4 games during your red shirt year. (again to develop). All other college sports do not allow participation in games.

  “Redshirt is a delay or suspension of an athlete&apos;s participation in order to lengthen their period of eligibility. Typically, a student&apos;s athletic eligibility in a given sport is four seasons, aligning with the four years of academic classes typically required to earn a Bachelor&apos;s Degree. However, in a redshirt year, student athletes may attend classes, practice with an athletic team, and &quot;suit up&quot; for play – but they may compete in only a limited number of games.   You would assume that getting an invite to the draft would mean you&apos;re going to go as a top pick but that isn&apos;t the case. &nbsp;Every year someone that&apos;s predicted to go high in the first round doesn&apos;t for many reasons. &nbsp;A prime example, shedeur Sanders was predicted to go top five overall and went fifth round.

  The draft is the most interesting part of the season to hardcore football fans . It&apos;s the chance for teams to really improve .Teams don&apos;t forfeit their draft position in a trade , they trade them to another team either for a draft choice or choices or a player or players from the other team , sometimes for a combination of both players and draft choices .The draft is always televised in the US , I don&apos;t know if it is in the UK .

Some odd questions for sure, especially the mother question. I would be curious how it was answered by the players.

  Watching guys get the phone call is very emotional because they have worked their whole lives for something that only about 1% of them get to achieve so it&apos;s a big deal. Most of them burst into tears because their family is set for life.

  When it comes to draft selection, teams generally adopt one of two philosophies. <br><br>1) draft according to (position) need, even if the player selected is not rated as highly as other available players at other positions. <br><br>2) draft the best available player, regardless of position, even if your team doesn&apos;t have an immediate, pressing need for the role.<br><br>Generally speaking, the higher the draft choice, the more valuable the contract to which the team is committing. &nbsp;In other words, the earlier a player is drafted, the more money he will make. <br><br>The advantage of choosing first comes with a lot of risk. &nbsp;If the player doesn&apos;t work out, the team has spent a lot of money for nothing. &nbsp;These are called &quot;draft busts&quot;. &nbsp;<br><br>One of the most famous busts in NFL history occurred in 1998. &nbsp;Two elite college quarterbacks were available - Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. &nbsp;Experts were conflicted. &nbsp;Manning was considered more polished and pedigreed. &nbsp;His father was a Hall of Fame quarterback and the Manning family are considered NFL royalty. <br><br>Leaf was considered the more physically gifted with a higher potential ceiling. <br><br>Manning went on to win multiple Super Bowls and became a Hall of Famer in his own right. &nbsp;Leaf proved to be undisciplined, immature, and unable to adjust to the pace and pressure of the NFL. &nbsp;Within a few years, he was done. &nbsp;A few years after that, he descended into substance addiction, financial insolvency, and petty crime for which he spent time in prison.<br><br>That&apos;s an extreme example, but it does illustrate the stakes of the NFL Draft. &nbsp;There is a film called &quot;Draft Day&quot; starring Kevin Costner. &nbsp;If you are interested in learning more about the nuts and bolts of assembling an NFL team, I recommend it.
