I hear many locals say to avoid tourist places such as Leicester Square and Oxford Street, I was born in London and I also live in the city. I say the opposite. Go to those places. They're famous for a reason. Go and experience them yourself and see how you feel. Yes. It can be expensive but you don't have to buy anything. There's nothing wrong with experiencing the atmosphere and simply enjoying what you see.

I live in Kentish town and walk to central London 3, 4x a week basis. I don't feel like it's far at all. Many of the sights are within walking distance. So my advice is to bring walking shoes lol. Plus, Oxford Street is NOT always busy. I've been there at different times when barely anyone was around. It could be a weekday in the early afternoon or late in the evening. It depends. Yes. It's generally busy, but it's the most famous street in the world. So it makes sense.

As mentioned in this video, the museums and galleries are amazing. A lot of them free. The green spaces are fantastic getaways. One of my favourite areas is Hampstead Heath and the Highgate village area. Kind of a hidden gem for those visiting the first time. It's tranquil and rather different from other parts of London. If you have time, I'd recommend visiting Hampton Court Palace. So beautiful and majestic.

But all in all, you should do what you feel like doing. If you feel like using transport to explore, then use it. If you want to explore by foot, then do that. If you feel like buying souvenirs in London's hotspots, going on the London Eye, taking a photo with a red telephone box or going to Piccadilly Circus...then do that! There's isn't a wrong way to experience London. Just your way. I hope you have a fantastic time in the city. It will be a great story to tell when you're back home.

Whilst the tube will generally be quicker, as a tourist, using the red buses is recommended. It is nicer above ground and you can save the cost of a guided tour. Another reason people don't talk much on the tube is that is too noisy, but don't be afraid to ask for travel directions if you are uncertain. Most people will be happy to respond (unless they are tourists too).

For Christmas travelers, use the buses! Even if you have nowhere to go, get on one just so you can see the beauty of London at Christmas time. For anxious travelers ... you'll be fine on the tube. Last time I was there, I had my niece who was 10. I was with her all the time but I told her to see if she can get us from Heathrow to King's Cross by herself and she did. Then she got us from King's Cross to Oxford circus...so ... 10yr old had no problems at all! Anxious about the stop you need? Take note of the stop ahead of yours so that when you get to that one, you'll know that you will be ready to get off at the next one.

I'm going to take slight exception with you here - I first visited London in 1977 as a kid and have been over 100 times since. I have ALWAYS found the majority of Londoners to be pretty friendly and very helpful.

As an American, I've used our 2 largest cell carriers Verizon and ATT with no issues at all since Brexit. I've been dozens of times in the past couple years. ATT is 10.00 a day extra for my plan and it's super fast.

For those visiting London with a long list of places to see but no idea how to plan it all, this guide is for you. As someone born and raised in London, here's the biggest piece of advice I can give anyone visiting the city. Don't think about London as one giant place. Instead, think about it in two ways:

Geographically – North, South, East, West and Central London. By the TfL transport zones – Zones 1-9, and now combine those two ideas.

A common mistake visitors make is trying to tick off attractions from all over London in the same day. On a map they can look close together, but London is huge. Even Central London is much larger than most people expect, and travelling back and forth across the city wastes valuable time that could be spent actually enjoying it.

Instead, before your trip and heading out each day, decide on one area of London and explore everything nearby. Look at the main attraction you want to visit, then ask yourself, "What else is within walking distance or just a few Tube stops away?" Build your day around that area rather than criss-crossing the city.

To make planning even easier, I like to break Central London into three sections and add in other areas of London: West-Central, Central-Central, East-Central, North London and South London (South of the river).

Although many of London's biggest attractions are in Zone 1 (the city center), it is still enormous. Breaking it into 3 smaller sections makes it much easier to plan your days and helps you discover places you might otherwise miss.

For example, if you're spending the day in West-Central, you could visit Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and the world-famous museums in South Kensington. But instead of heading across London afterwards or back into Central-central (where there are too many things to see), stay in the area and explore nearby neighbourhoods like Notting Hill, Shepherd's Bush (home to Westfield London), or Hammersmith (these are in zones 1-3). You'll not only save time travelling, but you'll also experience parts of London that many tourists never get to see.

The same idea applies wherever you are. Pick an area, explore everything around it, then save the next part of London for another day. You'll spend less time on trains, less time rushing, and far more time actually experiencing the city.

London isn't a city you "complete" in one day—or even one trip. The best way to see it is area by area, letting each neighbourhood tell its own story.

Did you know that all the tiles on the walls of every station on the tube are different? This is because when the tube was built a lot less people could read and the different tiles signified different stations.
