Thebes 3,000 Years Ago — Walking Through the City of the Pharaohs

Ancient Thebes was the beating heart of Egypt's New Kingdom, a magnificent city of temples, pharaohs, priests, merchants, craftsmen, and ordinary families living beside the Nile. Three thousand years ago, Thebes stood at the height of its power. In this cinematic reconstruction, we travel through the city from the eastern bank of the Nile into its crowded docks and markets, where fishermen, traders, scribes, soldiers, and laborers filled the streets. We explore the monumental Karnak Temple, the sacred center dedicated to Amun, including its massive Hypostyle Hall, sacred lake, towering pylons, sphinxes, and hidden sanctuary. Across the Nile lies the Valley of the Kings, where skilled artisans created hidden royal tombs for Egypt's pharaohs. Here we encounter the tombs, religious artwork, burial treasures, tomb robbers, mortuary temples, and the extraordinary legacy of Hatshepsut, whose terraced temple still rises dramatically from the cliffs. The story then expands beyond Thebes itself, revealing the power of Egypt's empire, its connections with Nubia and Canaan, royal diplomacy, foreign tribute, military power, trade, and the growing influence of the priests of Amun. But even the greatest city could not escape time. We follow Thebes toward its eventual decline, including civil wars, foreign invasions, shifting trade routes, the sack of Thebes by Assyrian armies, and the city's transformation from a thriving capital into a magnificent ruin. Finally, we return to modern Luxor, where Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, and the treasures associated with Tutankhamun continue to reveal the extraordinary world of Ancient Egypt.
