10 Reasons Bedrooms Were Always Clean in the 1950s

  These days people lounge around in the bedroom, eat doritos, watch TV by the hour, kids in the bed and DOGS. I'm old. When I was growing up you made the bed and did not disturb it until bedtime. Your pajamas were folded and tucked under the pillow. You were not allowed to SIT on the bed, it would wear out the mattress. Some kids had a little desk and chair . Friends came over sit on the bedroom floor and play records. No laundry on the floor,  toys in the toy box. You put one thing away before bringing out another. My closet was about 3 feet wide. I had 3 pair of shoes, loafers for school, mary janes for church, and a pair of KEDS for in the yard. 3 dresses for school, one for church, 3 cotton (cheap) dresses for around the house (hand me downs), maybe a pair of jeans and WHITE COTTON  BLOUSE,  ironed.  On Saturdays dad and I watched cartoons, ate cereal and then we washed windows inside and out. I did all the ironing, we did dishes right away after dinner. The younger kids folded laundry. Everybody had a chore. Twice a year we did deep cleaning. Move, or rearrange furniture. We did not eat between meals, except occasionally....popcorn once in a while. No sodas except on weekends. No eating in the living room. On weekends we mowed the grass and washed the cars. I loved to wax our VW beetle, we called him Elmo. We raked up mountains of maple leaves and pine cones. I loved our chickens. I fed them, gathered eggs and watched their interesting behavior . Mom loved our flower beds and we all took care of the vegetable garden. If you drank something , even water, it was in the kitchen, kids didn't open the fridge. We had a fruit bowl and a fancy bowl for nuts.  Homemade cookies on weekends and holidays. Thanksgiving was a great event. Mom and dads friends came over and played cards. If nothing good was on TV (3 channels) we played board games.  In the summer us kids were outside most of the day. We had sandwiches, chips and koolade on the back deck. Grilled burgers on the BBQ under the chestnut tree. Dad was a naval officer and our weekend company were officers and their wives. The men wore slacks and sport shirts, and leather shoes. The women wore fitted cotton dresses and had beautifully groomed hairstyles. Beehive, flips and up do  were popular. No jeans, ot track shoes, t shirts were considered "under wear".  Jeans and t shirts were when the men were working on their hotrod car projects. I miss ice tea on the back deck and playing croquet with my grandmother. ❤❤❤

  Reading was always done at night in the bed. That's how they relaxed before sleep.

  people didn’t have the amount of clothing we have today and they didn’t have as many shoes

  Correct in every way. Very nostalgic for me as a 1950s teen. One of the first things I remember growing up is my mother forbidding us to ever play on the bed. I did not do any housework other than some dusting on Saturdays and helping to dry the dishes. Mom did it all. I didn't realize how hard she worked until I married while still in my teens and had to keep my own house and raise children. I was a real awakening!

  I hang out my laundry on a clothesline. <br>I LOVE it! &nbsp;It&apos;s kinda therapeutic.

  My grandmother’s bedroom always looked like this—simple, neat, and nothing was kept without a reason. She used to say, “A room is easier to clean when everything has a place.” I understand that much better now.

  In many houses, the living rooms were completely closed off to kids. They were instead for &quot;company.&quot; I can remember our neighbors having plastic slipcovers on their living room furniture. They were meant to keep the furniture clean when it wasn&apos;t in use.
