Joel should have smashed the egg on the porch right after she spoke to him like that. He should have said, " all you care about is that stupid egg, I can't wait to go to college and get away from your BS"....

Fun fact……The lady who throws the egg was actually Peter Falk’s wife in real life.

The cracked egg is the wound left by Lana’s temporary occupation of Mrs. Goodson’s place. She’s not a “materialistic b*tch who doesn’t care about her son or family”. She understands very well the meaning of feminine discipline and repeatability to the petit-bourgeois household and the importance of reproductive life to legal inheritance.

The petit-bourgeois household has admitted the woman it depends on disavowing: the openly transactional woman, the working-class girl, the sex worker, the one who names the cash nexus instead of concealing it under family, taste, love, education, and “good upbringing.”

But the film’s ugliest truth is that Joel does not become morally awakened by this. He becomes economically competent.

He does not learn solidarity with Lana and the “girls” or even his middle class petit-bourgeois male friends.. He does not learn care. He does not learn what Lana’s life costs her. He quickly assesses that the meager middle class assets are sources of revenue and wealth for him. He learns instead lessons about liquidity. He learns that almost any symbolic crisis can be converted into an opportunity and a money problem, and any money problem can be solved by organizing other people’s vulnerability into revenue.

His father’s lesson — earn your way out of trouble with hard work, make it right, take responsibility through household labor — belongs to an older moral economy of petit-bourgeois industrial capitalist economic discipline. Joel surpasses it into the neoliberal finance capitalism of the Reagan 1980s. Chores are obsolete. Guilt is obsolete. The new answer is performance, salesmanship, and entrepreneurial exploitation and wealth extraction. Work is for others to do.

That smirk at the end about “how will he pay for it” matters. The cracked egg has taught him the ruling principle of neoliberal finance capitalism: nothing is sacred once it can be priced, and nothing is ruined if it can be replaced without the owners knowledge.

This is why Joel is not merely the kid who “came of age.” He is proto-internet-platform ruling class bourgeois. He is the boy who discovers that sex, petit-bourgeois anxiety, social status, desperate working women, male insecurity, suburban space, and elite aspiration can all be routed through hundreds of transactions that can generate private profit and wealth. He is not just a future Princeton man. He is absolutely the future website founder, the women-ratings-site creep, the early internet pornography entrepreneur, the dating-app arbitrage boy, the man who converts intimacy into interface and wealth extraction and calls it innovation.

He learns that respectability does not require innocence or hard work. It requires carefully placing oneself at the nexus between a class desperate class that can be exploited and an anxious class that can be immensely profitable.

The mother was such a bitch, who the hell comes back from a vacation and the first thing she does it go put the light on for some stupid glass egg. She talks down to her son in every scene....I would go to Princeton and not call her, only his dad.
