It's kind of crazy how much natural chemistry they were able to develop between a silent protagonist and a weird imp thing. it was such a well executed slow burn. I think that's the reason why the ending feels so melancholic compared to the other games - there was a gradual build-up to something that felt suddenly cut short, like it could have been more. the hopeless romantic in me loves that they did this instead of a "happily ever after" ending though.

Oh thank GOD a TP video essay that focuses on writing and themes... I'm only five minutes in and there's more genuine story analysis here than I've seen in almost every other essay I've watched.

I think it's important to note that (concerning the end credits) the master sword is shown having been returned to the sacred grove before Link is seen riding off into the forest. Meaning that he isn't going off to return the sword, he's going off on another adventure. Knowing the cyclical nature of Zelda, and how Ocarina ends with Navi leaving, and Majora begins with Link searching for her - I think it quite obvious that Link is going on a journey to search for a way to reunite with Midna.

I'm actually surprised you didn't talk more about Ganondorf's final vision of Zant, especially in the context of talking about trust—the last person he sees isn't Link, Zelda, or Midna, it's the person he manipulated into being a tool for his own schemes. It's a nice mirror to Link and Midna's relationship.

You may be interested to know that Ganondorf originally had a longer monologue right before he died. It was cut late enough in the game that the full monologue was localized and can be found in the game's files.

"When the chosen ones appear...
They are always born into this world in perfect balance.
That is the destiny of the chosen.
That is the fate decreed by your gods, the only path for those who bear their crests.
When this world brings forth another marked as you are...
Know too, that it shall also be visited by one of my blood.
Do not think this ends here...
The history of light and shadow will be written in blood!"

Only the last two sentences made it into the final game. I think these extra lines add more solid characterization to Ganondorf, as they hammer in his disdain for the divine cycle of Hyrule's trinity. I also interpreted his motivation as more apocalyptic and destructive than Zant's--unlike Zant who wants to "corrupt" the light, Ganondorf wants to crush it outright. When Ganondorf and Midna finally meet, Ganondorf says the Twili "lacked true power" and that their history of disposibility was amusing to him. He's very forthcoming about Zant all his hopes and dreams, and the whole power of the Twili, being just a pawn to him.

I've always interpreted Ganondorf's death in this game as the death of his human form outright, with all the ones with big blue pig Ganon being set after TP, after his human "Ganondorf" form was killed for good.

Id like to point out , when zant makes midna get exposed to lanayrus light her body is also bent at an ackward angle. Like her spine in being bent into a "C" shape. So he was also bending her body in an intentionally painful way. Idk just like dam hes really that sadistic

There are times in TP where I can definitely see the Lord of the Rings movie influence.

Just a tip for anyone who doesnt know, the Grubs/Larvae you can get at the start of the game from the beehive can be attached as bait to your fishing rod to make the fishing part easier, i think you can also eat them for like a heart or so of healing.
there are 2 ways to get the hive down, one is to hit it with the slingshot after you finish the fishing, the other can be done a little earlier, you can use the bird summon and have it knock the hive down, you get a funny cutscene involving the shop owners husband if you do it this way

My take on the twilight beasts and zant being able to exist in the light world physically where as Midna couldn't at first is thanks to the power ganon gave zant and subsequently used by zant to corrupt the twilli. so they can exist due to carrying a small amount of light world / sacred power, though it is uncomfortable for them which is why they tend to stick to the twilight converted areas.
Midna has to be a shadow at first but once she receives zelda's piece of the tri-force and by extension it's sacred power she is capable of physically existing in the light world

My absolute favourite moment in this game is the end. Even after 4 boss fights with link and losing them all, ganon is to determined to die. Even when his triforce piece fades, he still doesn’t die. What does kill him then? Him imagining zant. Practically asking for help even after abandoning him. And what does zant do? Smile, turn his neck, which snaps ganondorfs making his eyes go white as he dies whilst still standing up. Genuinely chilling in an already chilling game. Also fantastic video dude deserves so many more views
