The way you explained this made it so easy to understand. 🧠

Just read this one for the office book club! I agree with you that the language was particularly lovely. I enjoyed it and so did everyone else. One of the few we all liked! I’ve never read Dracula, so I’d be curious to read it and compare. Thanks for the thoughtful review!

Absolutely thrilled about this episode! I'm always excited when people actually end up reading my recommendations, especially if they enjoy them and even more so if it's the host of my favorite book podcast! I actually agree that the story didn't completely sweep me off my feet but it's so incredibly interesting that it was the first of it's kind and so many of the themes have persisted in the genre until today! Knowing this really makes it such a fascinating read and one that I still think about every once in a while.
I also agree with your interpretation of Carmilla representing repressed aspects of Laura's psyche and therefore all the things that women in a patriarchal society have to repress - making her a threat to the patriarchy itself. The fact that Sheridan Le Fanu explored these themes 150 years ago while being a man himself is something that really impresses me as well.

also the fact that you casually dropped that you read twilight at some point reaaaally makes me hope for a twilight episode at some point :D
