They deny almost everyone no matter what you say or how you say it.

My generation grew up being told to suck it up, that our problems were not real. So we learned to figure things out independently, sometimes asking age group peers. We’re so used to being independent, unwilling to ask for help, taking our lumps and adapting, or having our complaints dismissed, that it’s challenging to let on to our realities. And as we’re approaching 60 or 50, the physical challenges are mounting, demanding we acknowledge them without downplaying.

I had to fight so hard to get on disability. It took 3 years of appeals, failing each appeal until the last one. I was told i could bring an advocate and I brought my mom but they wouldn't allow her to speak! They were so rude to me. I know my dr downplayed my disabilities. I have degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, 2 herniated discs, severe and uncontrolled asthma, severe anemia and suffer from migraines and IBS. I also am the sole caregiver to my 24 yr old daughter who is in a wheelchair and nonverbal which is very hard on me. They were going to deny me again, I could feel it. Then I did something that mortified me, I burst into tears. I never cry but especially in front of people. They told me I would be notified if I was accepted or not and 2 months later I got my approval letter. I was shocked. I think it was finally my tears of frustration that convinced them. I also was awarded 3 years of retro payments!

    When I applied for disability.
I told the man that yes I could pick up a 30 pound box of books.
Yes I could squat and get on my knees and get up.
Yes I could put together a display and pull it to the sales floor.
What I can’t do is repeat all of it over and over!!
I could do everything he asked at least once or twice.
My knees and back hurt. The bottoms of my feet hurt.
      I did not lie.
I was a vendor and quit my job. The lifting of book boxes and dragging big displays was killing me.
I have Rheumatoid arthritis!!
Of course they turned me down.
Took two years to get disability.
I was 53 at the time.
My sister was 40 and they said no. She was in worse shape than me.
She had had three back surgeries.
Had messed up knees.
They hurt, swelled all the time.
She never got approved.
She is now 51 and is working. She hurts everyday.
It has worn her down.
She had a stroke last year and has about gotten over it.
She was lucky.
She deserves to be on disability. She feels older than she should.
It’s not right. It’s not fair!!
Also we had the same person fighting for our disability!! 😢

I am bipolar and lost the vision in my right eye. I was denied twice and finally a judge approved.

You are absolutely right! I am now 61 and won my disability case by myself..Another helpful thing is give them examples of how it feels.."When I stand for more than 10 minutes, I'm looking around for a chair." "My feet feel like I am standing on a hot iron". Lastly, I read A Lot! I familiarized myself with the verbage as well.

Make necessary Drs appointments and KEEP them! My daughter is under 40 and has been on SSDI for 5 years. She's got multiple physical and mental health concerns and has been getting treatment for yeeeeears. They determined her disabled from 2016 due to all of the medical records. You should have seen that back pay amount! If it's not documented it didn't happen. Blessed be, everyone.
