Crescent City is now connected to a city in Japan called Rikazutakata. That city lost 1600 people and almost 80% of their buildings in the 2011 tsunami, and a boat that belonged to the local high school was swept out to sea. It later turned up on the beach near Crescent City, and students at their high school cleaned it up and found the name of the boat and the school. Word got out, and the Japanese Consulate and NOAA were able to send the boat back to its school in Japan. Some of the kids from both schools got to meet, and the schools are now sister schools, and the cities are sister cities.

I visited Crescent City a few times as a child, this is where my grandparents taught me that if the ocean recedes I should leave

I was in my parents' basement  in Victoria Canada in 1964 listening to a 3 band tube radio listening to ham operators. I first heard about the earthquake then the tsunami, we called it a tidal wave back then, as it hit city after city down the coast. The people of Port Alberni which was hit hard evacuated to high ground with heighbours helping neighbours. I went upstairs to get the family atlas to find out when we would die. (Hey, I was 12.). No one in BC died. It is a vivid memory.

That photo of the plank piercing through a tire is wild. Really demonstrates the colossal, terrifying strength of water and stone.

I didn't realize the extent of damage the Alaskan earth quake caused outside of Alaska.  It makes sense, of course, knowing the science of earthquakes, but when the Alaskan quake is talked about, they rarely if ever cover the tsunamis triggered by it.  Thank you for another excellent video!

Crescent City has lots of reminders of the old tsunami. The city has several murals of big waves, and the beer hall has the ominous name of Sea Quake Brewing

I was there and witnessed the damage. I was just short of 11 and we lived on H Street 4 blocks above the run-up. (The run-up is where the incoming water stopped). My dad and I went downtown to see what happened just after the 4th wave receded, and a lot of other people had gone downtown as well. Looking back, I know that this wasn't wise, because a 5th and larger wave could have come in and gotten us all. We should have gone to higher ground and stayed there for several hours at least. Downtown Crescent City was my little world up to that point, and it was a shock to see it wiped out overnight.

Living 45 minutes south of Crescent City, and I’ve seen some INSANE waves and flooding due to weather, I couldn’t even imagine how devastating this would’ve been.

Imagine stepping outside and seeing like a store you might have gone to suddenly 30 feet higher than it should’ve been. Utterly terrifying

The worst part was hearing that the sea floor could be seen before the 4th wave
