Biggie Who Shot Ya - 2Pac vs Biggie/The Notorious B.I.G. Beef and Diss Track Analysis: Who Shot Ya, Hit Em Up and Long Kiss Goodnight [Sean Combs: The Reckoning] - Hip-Hop Universe Tupac vs. The Notorious B.I.G. – The Heartbreaking Beef That Ended in Tragedy The beef between Tupac Shakur (aka 2Pac) and Christopher Wallace (aka The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie) is one of the most infamous and tragic feuds. The conflict between these two iconic artists not only defined an era in rap music but ultimately led to their untimely deaths. Let’s delve into the breakdown of the Tupac and Biggie beef, examining its roots, escalation, and lasting impact on the hip-hop community. Tupac and Biggie started their careers as friends and collaborators. The two first crossed paths in the early 1990s, bonding over their love for music and shared experiences growing up in the tough neighborhoods of New York City and Los Angeles. However, as their careers progressed, tension began to mount. The seeds of the Tupac and Biggie beef can be traced back to an infamous incident in 1994, when Tupac was robbed and shot multiple times in a New York City recording studio. Tupac believed that members of Biggie’s Bad Boy Records were involved, leading him to suspect betrayal from his former ally. This incident marked a turning point in their relationship, escalating their conflict from simmering tension to an all-out feud. The beef between Tupac and Biggie wasn’t just confined to behind-the-scenes drama. It played out publicly in their music and interviews, with both artists releasing diss tracks aimed at each other. Tupac’s scathing disses on tracks like “Hit ‘Em Up” and “Against All Odds” accused Biggie and his associates of being responsible for his attack and labeled them as traitors. Biggie responded with tracks like “Who Shot Ya?” and “Long Kiss Goodnight,” fueling the fire of the feud. "Who Shot Ya?" is a song by American rapper the Notorious B.I.G., backed by Sean Combs. Bad Boy Entertainment released it on February 21, 1995, on an alternate reissue of Wallace's single "Big Poppa/Warning". Its new B-side "Who Shot Ya", a revision of a track already issued earlier in 1995, was "controversial and hugely influential." Widely interpreted as a taunt at Tupac Shakur, the single provoked a "rap battle" between the two rappers, formerly friends. Wallace, when interviewed, explained his "Who Shot Ya" lyrics as simply portraying a rivalry between drug dealers. The instrumental is a sample that loops a portion of soul singer David Porter's 1971 song "I'm Afraid the Masquerade Is Over", from the album Victim of the Joke? An Opera. The song supposedly references Shakur's 1994 non-fatal shooting, which Shakur had suspected Wallace of being involved with. Wallace disputed Shakur's portrayal, and called the rumors blaming him "crazy" in the track's lyrics. Out of prison, Tupac answered in June 1996 by the B side "Hit 'Em Up"—accusing Wallace by name—a "diss track" which inflamed the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry to its peak. Associates of Wallace who witnessed his "Who Shot Ya" recording have unanimously disputed that it targeted Shakur. The rivalry extended beyond their music. Both artists engaged in a war of words during interviews and press conferences, with insults and accusations flying back and forth. The media circus surrounding their feud only amplified the tension and contributed to the escalating animosity between Tupac and Biggie. Part 1: How 2Pac & Biggie Became DEADLY Enemies (W...
