  Hi, Czech person here. I tried to explain a few things about &quot;Toys in the attic&quot; and I&apos;ll try to give a bit of context for this movie as well. Most children in the Czech Republic, (formerly Czechoslovakia) are familiar with a darker version of the story than the rest of the world. This is because, in 1939, a famous poet Viktor Dyk adapted the traditional German folk tale into a short novel, which is darker and focuses on the inner workings of the piper. Barta made a few changes, but he was adapting Dyk&apos;s version of the story.<br>The piper in the story is a normal man, gifted with a semi-magical power to lure living beings with music, outcasted by society out of fear of his power. He is lonely and a bit bitter about that (we&apos;ll get to that).<br>In Hameln, he meets the young woman, Agnes. She has another man in her life but can&apos;t resist the piper. The reason she is attracted to the piper is just compassion sprinkled with daddy issues. Where the town sees an old weirdo who hangs out with rats, she sees a mysterious and lonely soul in need of affection he never got. He falls in love with her by default, because it&apos;s the only affection and love in his life. She becomes his moral crutch and a source of compassion.<br>While never explicitly stated, there is an interpretation that the reason the piper is so cruel to the rats is that he takes out his anger and bitterness on them.<br>When he isn&apos;t paid, he is rightfully angry, but he doesn&apos;t want to harm anyone. He knows he has the power to do so, but he knows it&apos;s wrong plus he&apos;s afraid of hurting Agnes or her seeing him as a monster. He goes to consult her, but in the meantime, she found out that she is pregnant with the other man and kills herself out of dramatic sadness and for the plot convenience. With her gone, there is no love and no moral conscience holding the piper back, he goes batshit and takes out his anger and bitterness on people, gives up his fear of using the full potential of his power and drives the rest of the town into the river as he did the rats, which Barta symbolized by literally ratifying them. <br>Additionally, the introductions with all the workers and such are added into the tale by Barta. This was probably his way of protesting against the communist regime at the time. Making the villains the diligent workers and farmers is a silent middle finger to the empty communist slogans like &quot;Work is a noble cause&quot; &quot;Long live the workers&quot; &quot;to work is to live&quot; which failed him.<br><br>and yes, a lot of our tales and movies are a bit strange and a bit rough or vulgar, but we have lots of great stop-motion movies<br>I&apos;d recommend Fimfárum, which adapts several short stories into beautiful stop motion, Alois Nebel, which is quite new, or if you only have 18 minutes to spare, the short movie &quot;The Hand&quot; by Jan Trnka which you can find on youtube.<br><br>If you have any questions, I&apos;ll be happy to help and try to explain more.

  Though the romantic subplot may have come out of left field, you gotta admit that girl has taste. Come on, tall, dark, mysterious magic man with evil sith eyes? Like yass sis can get it!

  I was always told as a child that the Rats were drowned and the children were never returned however in some stories a single child would sometimes remain either because he was originally abandoned by the town or he was deaf.

  Another version of the tale is one where the children are taken to a paradise like realm and never returned, the town only learning about the Piper’s deed from a crippled child who couldn’t keep up with the other children.

  The ending implies that the truely innocent, the poor fisher and a baby/child, were spared by the piper.

  The version I was told as a kid didn&apos;t involve the children being returned to their parents who corrected their misdeed. Instead I was told that the Piper led the children to a river where they all drowned. They got the same treatment as the rats.
