As a life long Alaskan I’ve definitely seen a big decline in fishing over the last 20 years. King salmon especially are almost non existent, king crab are rarely allowed to be caught by locals, shrimp are being closed down, Dungeness crab are being closed down, silver salmon are on the decline, and there’s definitely the trophy mentality of halibut. The honest truth with halibut is over 100-110lbs they stop tasting as good and those big fish are the breeding stock they produce the most eggs. I personally think there should be a maximum size on halibut and then like marlin we take some pictures and let the fish go. Then we need to cut back on all other types of fishing. When a species has to be closed to fishing by local sportsman and subsistence users but is still open commercially that’s a problem because a small cannery is processing 400-500,000lbs of fish a day. It is not sustainable.

Nothing strange about it, we are raiding the fish stocks, and it's clear everyday more and more types of fish are ending up on the endangered list.  Greed and careless attitudes are the destroyers of a beautiful planet.  Time to wake up!

I live in Norway and our halibut stock is growing rapidly due to a lot less monkfish nets in the sea compared to 10-20 years ago. The problem with monkfish nets is that the monkfish dont die in the nets so they often fish for a week or 2 before hauled killing tons of halibut that have been dead a long time and is just tossed overboard since they cant be used as food. Current rod record is 540,1lb but it wont last long before it's broken again since we know there are 750lb hallie caught in comercial fishing. Now this is obv atlantic halibut but there isnt much difference between pacific and Atlantic  halibut exept from a few minor things wich are mostly interesting for biologists.

I KNOW WHERE THEY ARE ALL AT!!! . I’ve seen big o’ halibut steaks at the Costco. Almost 6” thick. I could only imagine the beast of a animal that thing came from.
