Socrates | The Life and Death of the Wisest Man in Athens | Full Documentary

Socrates wrote nothing. He founded no school. He held no office. He owned almost nothing. And yet, more than two thousand years after his death, his questions still shape the way we think. This is the story of Socrates — the man who may have been the wisest person in Athens, and the philosopher Athens ultimately sentenced to death. Born around 470 BCE, Socrates lived during the extraordinary rise and catastrophic fall of classical Athens. He fought as a soldier, walked barefoot through the Agora, questioned politicians, challenged generals, confronted poets and Sophists, and spent his life examining the assumptions of the people around him. His method was deceptively simple: Ask questions. What is justice? What is courage? What is virtue? What does it mean to live a good life? And most dangerously of all: How do you know what you think you know? According to Plato's account, the Oracle at Delphi declared that no one was wiser than Socrates. Rather than accept the compliment, Socrates set out to discover why. His investigation led him to one unsettling conclusion: perhaps his wisdom consisted simply in knowing that he did not know. But questioning Athens came with a price. His association with controversial figures such as Alcibiades and Critias, his relentless challenge to conventional wisdom, and decades of public questioning eventually contributed to his prosecution. In 399 BCE, at the age of seventy, Socrates stood before an Athenian jury of 501 citizens. He was accused of impiety and corrupting the youth. He could have apologized. He could have asked for exile. He could have stopped philosophizing. He chose none of them. Instead, he defended the life he had spent living — and accepted the consequences. This documentary follows Socrates from the height of classical Athens through his philosophical awakening, the Oracle of Delphi, the Socratic method, his relationships with Alcibiades and Critias, the collapse of Athens, his trial, his imprisonment, and his final hours. And then comes the larger question: How did a man who wrote nothing change the world? Through Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, medieval scholars, Renaissance humanists, Enlightenment thinkers, and modern philosophy, the questions of Socrates continued to travel across centuries. Athens killed Socrates. History made him immortal. If you've ever wondered what it actually means to live an examined life, this is Socrates' story. What is justice? What is virtue? What is a good life? Perhaps the wisest man in Athens left no answers because he believed the search itself was the answer.
