Nigel Owens is Welsh and yes the "im straighter than that one" line is what you thought it meant, hes open about it, no one cares, all that mattered is he was just very good at his job, hes retired from refereeing now

Your guess is correct about the famous "I'm straighter than that" line out throw.

The best thing about Nigel. Was that players and fans on both sides knew it was going to be a fair contest

The dynamic between players and refs in rugby is what every sport should strive for.

Nigel Owen was one of the only referees who could effectively manage the lippy and rule bending All Blacks, and that’s coming from a Kiwi. He was and still is The GOAT.

I’ve never seen a non-specialist break down rugby with this level of accuracy. To grasp both the technical complexities and the underlying ethics of such a complicated game is truly impressive.

It was a very fatherly way Nigel spoke to the players, he communicated clearly and explained what the player was doing incorrectly, he didn't tolerate talking back, he was incharge of the game at all times, he was very fair and the players respected him and his decisions. He is the gold standard of how to referee.

Nigel is the creme de la creme of referees. He still provides instruction to up and coming referees and clinics for World Rugby for officials from developing rugby nations. Any violence towards a referee will result in a lengthy suspension or indeed a lifetime ban from the sport which has happened to several players in lower league rugby.

You know you're in trouble when the ref uses your full name... " Christopher ! " 😂

I started playing rugby in middle school at the age of 12. From day one, our Rugby teacher instilled the lesson in us of respect, not only for the referee and linesmen, but also for the opposing team. Even after the most brutal games, you will always see the opposing teams, winner or loser, clapping and praising their opponents as they leave the pitch.
Even in these times, Rugby is still the most gentlemanly ball game on the planet.
Nigel Owens was (and still is) a marvelous ambassador for the sport.

He was so respected that, as a Welshman, World Rugby allowed him to referee an international game between his home country Wales vs. Barbarians in Wales.
