  They&apos;re called gums because the gum tree commonly hollows out, often providing the observant farmer with a natural premade cavity.

  I was a beekeeper for 5 years and took 3 years off. I&apos;m realizing I enjoy having them around, and my wife and I are moving back into the hobby. Before I quit, I was insulating my Langstrom hives year-round with 2&quot; foam. Feeding 2/1 sugar water all winter long in N Idaho. Of course, I treated as well, which is a MAJOR component to success. I had tremendous success and got up to 15 hives from splitting, swarms, etc. Now, moving back into the hobby, I&apos;m using my past experience to try a new approach. This approach seems very logical and uses what works and what&apos;s natural for the bees. This is likely be my new path forward. <br><br>U

  I only use Layens. I love them. Brood pattern is beautiful and the frames are full of honey. Most important-I never stress my back.

  Great video! &nbsp;Love the comparixon of the different hives and I agree with you 100% that not only is this easier for the human, but more natural and organic for the bees. &nbsp;Just what I was looking for! &nbsp;Thank you so much.

  Thank you!! I’ve been a hobby bee keeper for 20+ years, three colonies. I was unfamiliar with that type hive. But at 73 NOT having to lift supers to harvest, or deeps in order to do inspections is very interesting and appealing.

  As a beginner beekeeper at age 68, and a short, stout female with a bad back, I was put off by the idea of having to always have my son come to lift off the supers for me. &nbsp; A horizontal hive will mean that I can do inspections and harvests by myself! &nbsp; I&apos;m working my way through the &quot;Keeping bees in Horizontal Hives&quot; book that I purchased from Dr. Leo. &nbsp; I would love to take one of his classes!

  Im a spanish beekeeper...i work on three models..langstroth..dadant and layens. In my opinion in the layen hives the bees are more healthy and strong..they grow much faster.. (sorry for my english) I recomend the spanish layens hive..normally 12 combs..very portable and lately with possibility of supers...
