I've bought stuff from street vendors and paid too much. I've bought stuff from "cheap" places and paid too much. The cheapest prices I've found are at Big C and stores like D.I.Y. (Do it yourself, household goods). Even Chatuchuk I've been ripped off royally. I tried bargaining down sunglasses and could only get them down to 300 baht but the same glasses I've seen at Big C for 100 baht. So, you really need to shop around. For food? Avoid young vendors, they don't have good culinary skills. Go for the old Aunties. Those ladies know how to cook.
