The most genius aspect of this movie was casting near unknowns as the lead and having all the seasoned A-listers basically cameo as officers. Really shows who gets remembered in war.

And after all of that, he doesn't even get to go home now. Just a brief respite until the next ordeal.

Richard Madden was in this film for two minutes and I'll never forget his performance.

One of the things that struck me about this later scene is that he says to Blake, "It was very quick," and the tragic thing is is that we both know that that isn't really true.

My father-in-law's grandfather fought in this war. He was gassed with minor injuries, and sent to a field hospital behind the lines to recover. A nurse tending to him liked him, and on her own, changed the paperwork raising the seriousness of the injury so he could be sent back to Ireland. When he got home, his house was destroyed by fire, so he decided to emigrate to the US. There he met a Scottish woman, married her, and had 3 daughters and 2 sons. One of those daughters adopted an irish orphan, who was given away because his family was too poor to feed him. When the orphan became a man, he married, had a a daughter of his own, whom I later met & married, and now we have two beautiful children. That nurse's decision helped create my family, and I wish I knew who she was so I can thank her family.

Richard Maddern acts with his eyes. He conveys joy to anguish in moments and it's amazing.
