So now I want to hear your stories. What piece of technology have you kept for years, working or not, because you just can’t bring yourself to get rid of it?

And bonus points if, like me, you’ve been telling yourself you’re definitely going to fix it someday.

Tell me about it below. These are exactly the stories I want The Tech We Keep to be about.

Nice to have the (now) backstory of your Denon. Those 7 decks are sometimes difficult to dismantle, I get that. That's why the later nakamichi BX and CR series are popular, they are easier to service (exepting the "dead spot" mode motor of course) I just got that older Akai GXC-740D and the transport is really wedged in with little moving space to take out. The motor in that unit is enormous. But I will have to bite the bullet, all belts and pinch rollers must be changed. The Akai GX-88R is still on my "nice to have" list. I do have the similar non-autoreverse GX-F71 with the same motorized door.
Your buyer's for sure an avid collector...

Oh man, what a coincidence that I stumbled on this video. I recently picked up a Yamaha KX-930 from eBay for a great price. Description said “rewinds and fast forwards but won’t play”. Wow! It’s gotta be Belts! I can fix that! Sure enough, the stock belts literally melted into the mechanism. I got it cleaned up and new belts installed in one afternoon. Tested it, and it worked. Only once. The second time I hit play, the mechanism locked up, and the controls became unresponsive.

Based on everything I’ve researched, the mode motor likely has a dead spot and needs replaced. And I am in no way experienced enough to attempt that. I reached out to a local tech, but since I “tampered” with it to replace the belts, the tech says they will most likely decline working on it. (Though they did say to bring it by and they’ll look at it)

I have another deck, a JVC double deck, that I tried replacing the pinch rollers in and the deck never worked again after that. I’ve been told by folks on Reddit the springs in the pinch roller arms are misaligned, but I can’t for the life of me figure how. The service manual of course, doesn’t match the actual deck, and is of no help. That’s been sitting in my closet for at least a year now.

I had a Sony 2 cassette deck, but it couldn't compare to my Sony reel-to-reel. I wouldn't spend money on all those cassette decks, but rather get one reel-to-reel deck in good condition, like a Sony TC-765, a Revox B77 Mark II, one of the Teac X-series decks, or the brand-new Revox B77 Mark III.
