Gerson is Exactly What Deltarune Needed

One thing to add onto that: Gerson managed to defy his own prophecy too. He's dead, and he was supposed to be confined to the dark sanctuary for the foreseeable future. He's still there by the end, but because he wrote the letter to his son, and got Susie to memorize it for repeating in the real world, he made a difference beyond the boundaries of his fate.

Gerson is what the story needed in that moment; a beacon of light. Chapter 4 would have been a miserable slog with defeat at every turn without it.

Gerson even shows you, the player, that you could also defy the prophecy if you try. After you go left when Susie and Ralsei go right while trying to find Gerson's study and press the button to reveal the notes, you'll talk to Gerson. He asks you where you should go next, and if you choose further left (even though the way left is already over), Gerson will praise you for choosing to create your own path and an invisible road is created that you couldn't access otherwise. You'll find a chest that has nothing in it, but Gerson will tell you that it's okay if you don't find anything and that you still get a benefit out of exploring and making your own path, and then Kris gets 1 more HP than usual. Every time I looked at Kris's HP as I spared the enemies, that 1 extra HP always reminded me of Gerson and of the fact that I made my own path for a change. It was nice to see that singular extra HP because, even though it's minuscule, it reminded me that I can make a change, that there's still hope in these dark times.

Do note that throughout every single chapter of Deltarune thus far, there are multiple moments where Susie flat out ignores the player's choices. In chapter 1, you cannot control for for more than half of it. In chapter 2, she literally ACTs on her own and forces Ralsei to do it too. When they have to split up, she snaps "Why does Kris always get to decide" and overwrites whatever the player says. In chapter 3, she swaps out the controllers so Kris can solve the puzzles and she can mess around, and encourages Ralsei to make his own choices too. She plays the drums on her own and immediately flunks out without caring about the score. In chapter 4, there's a bit where she asks you to make a decision and then goes "nope, too slow" if you don't select anything in time.<br><br>Susie has been <b>constantly</b> acting on her own, building her own path. I believe it will culminate in her rewriting the story

"Doubt, irony, that's what poisons your story... That, and too much predictability."<br><br>Gerson shows that the people who have spent time theorizing about the plots of the future chapters are not going to easily predict what will come. Toby is a storyteller, a great storyteller, but he is NOT predictable. Even Gerson's fight is proof that Deltarune will not be following a formula. I don't belive people SHOULDN’T theorize, but I do think that predicting the plot for a game that has been in the backburner of Toby's mind for over a decade is not as easy as people realize.

I like how the gerson fight feels essentially required to the story unlike the others, hes vital to susies development and its required to know why hes so goated in the titan fight

There's also something else i love about gerson, if you look at the description of the so called magical axe he gives you, it says something like "it's just a normal axe with no magic powers, but you became much stronger by trying to get it" which i think is beautiful because the weapons are not important, whats important is tge experiences that forges you, and also after the fight Susie has better stats

Gerson literally reminds us that <br>"Your Choices don't matter"<br>Is Deltarune's version of<br>"It's Kill or be killed"<br>Our choices do matter, and we should use those choices to defy the "Prophecy"

The thing that scarred me the most about Gerson Koopa Boom was his talk about irony and sincerity, as a writer, I felt that.
