I’m a guitar player not having fun anymore, and decided to actually learn how to play my bass. You have no idea how much you helped me in a few minutes.

I'm a drummer and that's the kind of funky shit that gets my kick foot going!! When I'm jamming to that kind of playing, it feels like my foot is going on it's own and locks in with the bass and I play the top of the kit comping with the vocals/guitar. I'm big on having the lyrics sheet when coming up with parts for any originals I do because those bits of tension and release go with what the song is about. If the bass goes along with that concept, you get a wicked rythm section going on in the band!!

Express Yourself is a good example of playing the octave on beat 1. And he does it every time.

I discovered this writing the bassline for a song for one of my bands. I was having trouble because the verse is just one chord, which we don't normally do. Then I played around with a 2-measure phrase where I only play the root note on beat 4 of the 1st measure. The rest is just melodically dancing around the root in order to get melodic interest. It was quite a cool idea to play around with.

A great example of doing stuff like this is Anthony Jackson's work on the Steely Dan track "Glamour Profession". He very rarely (if ever) plays the root note on the one of a bar, but still does enough to sketch out the key of the chord for the listener.

I like to come at the root from a half step below it and land the root on the "e" of 1-e-&-a"

Very informative and explicit tips to spice up bass grooves. And i've been a professional drummer for 30 years and that's the kind of bass knowledge that really makes a difference in a real life musical setting and one that immediately makes me identify a very seasoned player vs a "good" one. 👍👍
