The best part about this outstanding scene is Denzel shows the character really hates killing anyone and tried to be civil till he had no choice.

One of my favorite bits in this scene is the part where Robert is constantly opening and closing the door, symbolizing his internal battle with himself. He wants to remain true to the promise he made to his late wife that he won't walk this violent path anymore, but these gangsters have proven themselves to be so despicable that he can't stand the thought of just letting them walk.

The symbolism of Denzel slowly and deliberately turning each of the skulls on the desk towards the three men as a foreshadowing of what's to come, is simply chilling and brilliant.

But $9800 was the chance.  The amount of money that a normal guy in his position might be able to gather.  He made that offer as a regular man.  It was a test.  The Russians failed the test.  But McCall knew they would.  He just needed a  excuse.  He apologizes to his wife.  Because now the door is open.  And he can be who he really is again.  A reckoning

This version of McCall, played magnificently by Denzel, is a hybrid. A gentle, caring and deeply empathic side that disappears when he turns his other half on, like a switch. The psychopathic, murderous apex predator that relishes in violence and obliteration of self perceived predators. <br>You can see it coming on at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfNU6JfDN_c&t=192">3:12</a> with McCall the creature of light all gone and replaced with the dark avatar of vengeance and mayhem now fully activated. There is a shark like quality to McCall's dark half, dead and pitch black eyes, primeval and void of any contemporary notions of mercy, forgiveness or proportionality. Once a challenge has been accepted by him, there is no going back. Examples must be made. This is a master craftsman who savors the pain and suffering he inflicts and enemies he takes apart.
