  Okay, just wanted to point out as I go back through old CGB videos - Superior Spider-Man was an incredible run! When I first heard of the concept I fucking HATED it. What, so the bad guy wins? Peter is dead? Obviously they were just going to retcon it, or whatever, and honestly, I couldn&apos;t buy Doc Ock even TRYING to do the right thing. Then years later, when the dust had settled, I decided to give it a read, and I was STUNNED. It was an incredible run. One thing to note, is that, as a Spider-Man, Doc Ock failed in many ways. He didn&apos;t actually live up to Peter&apos;s ideals, he made mistakes, he was flawed. But what was so interesting is that he also succeeded in a bunch of ways. Peter actually learned some things from Doc Ock&apos;s run as Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Octavius grew as a human being during his time as Spider-Man, so much so that when they brought him back as Doc Ock later, I didn&apos;t actually buy it. They regressed the character in a way that did a huge disservice to this run, and to this day I prefer The Superior Spider-Man to Doctor Octopus as a role for Octavius. The best versions of Doc Ock are the ones that acknowledge this run, the versions that have grown as a person, that are trying to be better. The entire second Superior Spider-Man run a few years later was mostly good, but ended on a terrible note where Octavius just regressed again to his traditional role<br><br>In a big way, this is kinda my problem with big two comics in general, and Spider-Man specifically. They always want to regress Peter, and his rogues, back to whatever state they were in in the 60s because they think it&apos;ll sell more comics. Peter gets this treatment near constantly, he&apos;s never allowed permanent growth or development as a character, he&apos;s perpetually a single, down-on-his-luck teenager-lite even though canonically he&apos;s in his 30s. Even with the entire fanbase BEGGING them to bring back his marriage to Mary Jane Watson, the editorial staff seems convinced a status quo that worked for decades, Peter as a married man, couldn&apos;t possibly work, and they&apos;ll bend over backwards to keep it from happening. And his rogues get the same treatment. Kraven undergoes character development in the ongoing Squirrel Girl comic, and guess what? Literally around the exact same time, while the comic is still in print, they bring Kraven back to his 70s character, ignoring continuity from not only the other ongoing books he&apos;s appearing in, but also from actual Spidey books following Kraven&apos;s Last Hunt, so that they can tell Kraven&apos;s Last Hunt again. But NOWHERE do I feel this character assassination of the Spider books more than in Doc Ock. He really should, permanently, be the Superior Spider-Man. He&apos;s not a better villain than he is an anti-hero. He was never more complex or more interesting than when he was trying to do the right thing, and yet, they insist he must be 60s Doc Ock. Not even 90s Doc Ock, who was actually somewhat complex, actually trying to do the right thing, even though it didn&apos;t end well. No, they insist he must be 60s Doc Ock because &quot;that&apos;s what sells&quot;. Meanwhile, guess what, nobody is fucking reading Spider-Man anymore. It ISN&apos;T selling. And yet, Spider-Man editorial insists a now 60-year-old status quo is what we want to see while fans beg them for better. And you know what books actually sell well? The ones where Peter is back with MJ. The ones where Peter develops as a character, where he makes steps forward. Those are the arcs and runs Spider-Man fans keep buying decades later, not One More Day.<br><br>Anywho, that&apos;s my Spider-Man rant for the day. As a fan of Spidey, I&apos;m really disappointed in the way his character has been handled, mostly in editorial.
