I like the way you think. Going to a real pro for some hands on learning. As you said great way to meet someone new maybe connection for wood and of course bringing a personally made gift is a good show of appreciation. Completing the circle kind of thing. 🤙🙏

Most of what I turn is Pacific Madrone, which is a variety of laurel. It has extremely high water content, and warps insanely. I found out that it is better to let it stay in log form and trim off the ends each time I want to make more bowls. I lost a lot of blanks when I cut into sections and then sealed the ends. Part of that may be because our summers here in western Oregon are very dry, and even with heavy tarps over them, I lost most of my first few logs. <br><br>When I got my first chainsaw, the chainsaw shop asked me what I was going to do with it, and I told them about making bowls. They suggested a rip chain for my saw. That was good advice. Most of the blank cutting I do is ripping, and a cross cut chain does a worse job of ripping than the ripping chain does on cross cutting, if that makes sense....
