This was really helpful. I’m a pastor of a small Congregational church. I know exactly what it’s like to try and impose stricter ways on a people of loose traditions. Thank you pastor Matt.

It is a great comfort to know that even Jonathon Edwards got fired…. AS A PASTOR.

I am glad you brought this up, because people think that closed communion is an invention by us Lutheran’s. Prior to the 20th century, closed communion was essentially the practice of all confessions and denominations. Sometimes I wonder that it should not be exercised, more often and more judiciously.

That was a really excellent, concise but meaty presentation.

Edwards was right in insisting that those whodesired to participate in the Lord's Supper be regenerate. This ordinance is not fo rthe lost nor for those who go through the motions at church, masquerading as Christians.

very interesting story (and lessons to be learned)

Thank you for this very coherent presentation. Most people, even congregational churches in New England are unfamiliar with the halfway covenant, sadly, even fewer could care. As a credo Baptist I believe both were wrong but pedobaptism can be defended from scripture. I would not bar any reformed Christian from the table because I believe their baptism should be considered valid if they can defend their position from scripture. A defense based only on tradition or "implicit faith" in their church is not good enough. A somewhat parallel situation involves a friend who has been attending a restorationist church for several years but cannot join it because she refuses to be rebaptized because she was baptized as an infant which is enough for her, she sees no requirement or reason to study the doctrinal logic of either church. The halfway covenant is simply indefensible manmade tradition.

It was God's will that Edwards be fired from the Northampton Church, He didn't simply allow it. It was a great loss for Northampton but a far greater blessing for the church for Edwards did so much of his best work in Stockbridge. Since then congregationalism, specifically the UCC, has progressively wandered so far from Christianity that with very few exceptions its associated churches can no longer be considered Christian. A very strong case can be made for associations opposed to congregations, congregations should mutually help and support each other but faithful congregations should not be in anyway compelled to remain in association with denominations that become heretical such as the United Methodist Church or Episcopal Church who claim ownership of local church's property.

While it's not the most popular level stuff, I'd be interested to hear about Jonathan Edwards' Idealism and your view on it. Personally not a fan of it but I'd love to hear your take.
