I had no plan when I quit my job. You did it right. My side hustle replaced my 9-5 income so I asked myself can I make it on my side hustle for 1.5 years until my pension started. It worked out. I am blessed.

You get sick less because you're not around everyone at work, who's around their kids, and their kids go do school and are around...
You get the point.
I went from sick a couple times a year, to once in 10 years.

I too have detailed spreadsheets that I used for planning before I retired and that I use to track actuals now that I am actually retired. Your level of detail is very similar to what I track. Admittedly, Excel is a happy place for me. I am de-cluttering and I found an old hard drive with a 20-year old version of one of my original planning worksheets and it is about 85% accurate to what I have in my current spreadsheets. I think that is pretty good! Thanks for sharing and all your videos!

I’m early retired. I know my expenses intimately and it’s easy to separate essential from discretionary. For me, I set a spending target at the beginning of the year and build my budget off that. My goal is to spend all of it. Totally different mindset when I no longer need to save.

Unpopular opinion: this is the real reason people stay broke — not because they don’t plan, but because their retirement plans are built on fantasy numbers that collapse the moment real life shows up. I was literally sitting there thinking, “Hold on… how did this go off the rails so fast?” when I saw that retirees often underestimate spending by 20–35% in the first two years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average retired household expects around $52,000 a year… but actually spends closer to $68,000 once healthcare spikes, travel increases, and those “one‑time” home repairs in states like Arizona or North Carolina start popping up. And here’s the part nobody talks about: Medicare doesn’t cover dental, vision, or long‑term care, which adds thousands more. So people stay broke not because they’re irresponsible, but because the retirement calculators they trusted were built for a world that doesn’t exist anymore.

Interesting. Thanks for the look back comparison. Planning is important but we shouldn't expect it to be spot on; we need to build in flexibility and contingency.

I've been retired over 3 yrs now. I don't have a budget and my life style is same as before quitting work. If I need something I buy it but I don't just blow money for the sake of spending it because I have it.
