It's kind of sad that a westerner has to remind Indians about their history and heritage forgotten by many Indians themselves.

I visited Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand this year, a few months ago. I was seriously surprised at the penetration of Hinduism in their culture and rituals. Its just not mentioned as much as it should be!

No one would have told this story in west if India would not been on rise… if you want world to acknowledge you, you have to become stronger in current sphere.

Dalrymple's interests include the history and art of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Middle East, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Jains and early Eastern Christianity. Every one of his ten books has won literary prizes. His first three were travel books based on his journeys in the Middle East, India and Central Asia. His early influences included travel writers such as Robert Byron, Eric Newby, and Bruce Chatwin.

He is also one of the co-founders and co-directors of the world's largest writers' festival, the annual Jaipur Literature Festival. He is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford.

The College is primarily an academic research institution with particular strengths in the humanities and social and theoretical sciences and an outstanding library. It also has strong ties to public life. Although its Fellows are involved in teaching and supervision of research, there are no undergraduate members.

BRILLIANT presentation that everyone MUST watch and absorb fully.

The world owes a lot to India, a mind boggling land that never directly employed war for any means and yet had such influence, a stunning gift to the world.

Amazingly India remains a gift that keeps on giving to the world.

May the world learn to give a lot back to India.

About 10 years ago, I watched an American university lecture series on the history of India. The first 3 were the best. It talked about where the people came from who settled on the subcontinent. The Indus Valley Civilization was an eye opener. Researchers believe that civilization lived the last 800 years of their existence without war or violence. In so many, many ways it was profoundly advanced. The other take away were the records of the Roman Empire's treasurers who complained to their leaders how much money they were sending to India. It is then one realizes how rich and vibrant that subcontinent was. It is no surprise from my perspective that it is rising again. We should be taught these lessons early in our schools.

Why it is a surprise? To a great degree it is because what happened to India in the next millennium. V.S. Naipaul attempted to answer this question in his book:"India: A Wounded Civilization".

It's an honour to have you here educating how India has shaped the modern world in every aspect such as language ,trade , economy ,architecture, mathematics, food as medicines ,attire, fashion and friendships between continents in the past, present and will strive to do in the future as well. Now I can understand how India preached "Atithi Devo Bhava"
