The legend of Gumnami Baba, an unnamed mystic who died in Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh in 1985, continues as one of India's most enduring mysteries. The Justice Vishnu Sahai Commission's report on Gumnami Baba, tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday, has reportedly said it could not determine whether the reclusive sadhu, touted by many to be Subhas Chandra Bose, was indeed Netaji in disguise. While saying that the findings were inclusive, the report of the Justice Vishnu Sahai Commission also highlights a few similarities between the two. Drawing parallels between Subhas Chandra Bose and Gumnami Baba, the Justice Vishnu Sahai report mentions that Gumnami Baba was also fluent in English, Bengali and Hindi -- like Netaji. The report also talks about Gumnami Baba's love for music and cigars. "Gumnami Baba had deep knowledge about politics and would spend most of his time in meditation," the source said quoting the report. The report, however, added that it was difficult to establish a link between the two, sources said. The judicial inquiry report will be tabled in the UP Assembly on Wednesday, a day after the findings were put before the Uttar Pradesh cabinet. THE JUDICIAL INQUIRY Gumnami Baba lived in eastern Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad till 1985, and many believe he was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. After the high court called Gumnami Baba "an extraordinary person", it directed the UP government in 2013 to set up a panel to end the controversy about his identity. The judicial commission was set up in 2016 to probe the identity of Gumnami Baba, considered by many as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in disguise. Justice Sahai had submitted the report to the governor in 2017. He had then said that establishing a connection between Gumnami Baba and Netaji was difficult as Subhas Chandra Bose died in 1985 and witnesses deposed before the commission only in 2016 and 2017. Nowadays we are living in such a age, where one knows that what will happen in next moment?
