Thanks nick. That was very interesting. I have seen a lot videos with narrow boaters who, all, at some point al discuss their toilets. However I have never seen one that included a discussion about the chemicals used.

Thankyou Nick, very informative. Yes the compost separating toilet seems the best option, easy & no chemicals.

Seperator toilet deffinitely! Feels much more self sufficient, straight forward and "clean". As for the solids, its possible to compost on the boat by rotating a few plastic container boxes that are stored on the roof (in my case). I havent yet lived on mine full time (just on and off) but so far it seems that composting wont be a problem. Will be moving onboard full time in a couple of weeks. Apparently it takes 3 months or so to compost, though it depends on the temperature, so I would like to find some insulated ones... might be.

I have seen some proper compost bins on boats, but those had a large cruiser sterns or was a widebeam.

How would you manage if your boat was your full-time home. Where would you dispose of the waste in that case?

We have a Simploo, we use biodegradable bags for the solids and bury them when full. Liquids go in an Elsan point.

I'd probably have a dog poo bag and a bucket available for emergencies, and stick it in a dog poo bin. But the main thing would be to avoid going to the loo on the boat at all wherever possible. Pub, cafe, supermarket, garage... anywhere with a toilet. Might take a bit of discipline though.

The "composting" toilet should be called the deferred labor toilet. Once you have your poop and urine collected, and transported to your garden....then you have to actually do the composting bit. I suggest you get hold of a copy of The Humanure Handbook to understand how to compost your waste in a safe and sanitary fashion. You might also look into the subject of Aerobic vs. Anaerobic composting. You may prefer the latter version. Thanks for the video!

I would like to propose another option: anaerobic digestion. Miss out on the chemicals, increase the tank or tanks volume and deliberately try to get the system anaerobically fermenting. This will give off a mixture of gases hopefully containing a lot of methane, which can be fed to a solid fuel cell unit to turn into electricity and heat. The former goes to the boat batteries, the latter to the heating system and/or heat sink. Every so often you need to do a pump-out but much less frequently.
