Is using translation cheating when it comes to learning a foreign language? In the paedagogical world of communicative Latin and Ancient Greek, we often eschew translation as an obstacle to acquisition — but there is more than one kind of "translation" ! In this video, I show you how to use translations to improve reading fluency in your target language; and this technique may be the only way to learn to read some ancient languages.

Sign up by April 12 to take part in the summer session classes at Ancient Language Institute! It even works for Shakespeare, reading the notes helps you understand the jokes and how Elizabethans/Stuarts thought. I know explaining a joke usually kills it but when you watch Shakespeare it is no longer a torrent of words.

My strategy for learning Latin is to get as much input as possible but ensuring it is appropriate for my level. Alongside Familia Romana, I read other Latin readers and novellas, starting with the easiest ones. Initially, I read out loud without looking up unknown words, but I make sure to mark them. Once I’ve finished the reader or novella, I look up the marked words and create flashcards in Anki. I then practice these words while continuing to read other novellas and readers. Finally, I reread the book, and by the second time, my comprehension is usually at least 90–95%. This works for me

Thanks for spelling this out so clearly. I've sort of done this approach before, but now I'm excited to give it another try. Time to dust off the multilingual books I've been hoarding. 😅

EDIT: I also just realized that I've been doing this with multilingual signs and user manuals basically my whole life. Probably why I can read a small amount of Spanish even though I've never taken classes or studied really.

when I am learning a new language and I come across a sentence I don't understand, I will look up the meanings of the words and the setence as a whole. Then I will re-read the entire sentence while thinking of the meanings of each word and how they affect the meaning of the sentence as a whole until I completely understand the meaning of the sentence in my head in the original language without thinking in English. Then I will continue on reading. For more simple sentences I might read it out loud and make relevant hand gestures or something as I say it.

I learned German as a child because I used to watch german TV shows - never did any grammar or memorised word lists. I am looking forward to the Latin version of Startrek.
