Don’t look at this franchise as a movie with sequels. It’s actually a story told through 4 movies. You can’t stop at seeing the first one. Great reaction 😊

In the book Rue's death has another heartbreaking element. Shortly after she died, Katniss receives a sponsor gift of just a small loaf of bread. She assumes that this came from the people of District 11 who probably had to pool money from a lot of people because gifts are extremely expensive and district people are generally extremely poor. But instead of cancelling it after Rue was killed they had it redirected to Katniss. A tribute receiving a gift from the people of another district was unprecedented in the history of the games.

When I was in 10th grade, I had a period in school where students did their homework. I finished early, so my teacher gave me his copy of The Hunger Game and managed to read the first chapter. I was so hooked, I bought my own copy that evening. I'm now a reader instead of a gamer like I was growing up. Finished the new book recently, and it was incredible as it was devastating!

Since no one has mentioned it- The reason why Katniss missed the first shot during the skill ratings is because she’s used to her homemade bow from home. She’s never used a bow with so much weight & such a tight string. In the book she actually tries a few times before getting a hang of the new bow, and then hits the dummy dead center. :) Loved this reaction! Don’t be afraid to ask questions as this fandom is VERY willing to answer them. There are a few things that will be answered with time & a few things that are only answered in the books. They’re incredible if you’d like to give them a read!

Something that we don't get to see as clearly in the movies is how effectively the capital divides the districts and isolates them from each other, and the Hunger Games is a big part of that. Like Snow says, they don't just round them up and kill them, they create a spectacle of having the districts kill each other's children. Building up animosity and fear of the other districts as the enemy, while at the same time communicating the ultimate power of the Capital. They also block communication between the districts, isolating each section to themselves so they don't feel like they have the numbers to revolt against the Capital and can't organize uniting with the rest of the population.

The biggest push toward revolution wasn't the berries, imo, it was when Katniss and Rue formed a friendship beyond an alliance, when they protected each other without benefit to themselves, when Katniss mourned and honoured Rue's body with the flowers.

It sent the message that the districts are not enemies, they are oppressed together and on the same side, which was an incredibly powerful message in giving the population the hope to fight back. Plus an example of fighting for each other.

Another brick in that foundation in the books is when Rue's district pools their money together (a huge amount of money for people so poor) in order to send Katniss some bread in the Games, after Rue's passing.

17:40: A score of 11 is a double-edged sword. It attracts sponsors, but it also immediately puts Katniss on top of the careers' hit list.

Don’t worry. The sequels are also amazing. A bit less shaky cam so if that bothers you, it’s a bit more steady but that doesn’t mean the movies are any less crazy and awesome. Love your reactions. I love that you wear your heart on your sleeve and cry when we all bawled our eyes out. It’s always interesting.. we know from the opening scene it’s a yearly, involuntary child gladiator event but it still shocks to see them actually do it.

Welcome to one of the best franchises ever. As good as this movie is Catching Fire is among the greatest sequels ever made. Jennifer Lawrence showed the world what an acting powerhouse she was in this franchise.

There are two scenes in this first movie that always get to me. When Katniss volunteers for her sister and the scream her sister lets out. I don’t even have kids in that sound chills me. And then later the scene with Rue just guts me every time.

Fun fact, there is an american advertising award called The Golden Effie, it doesnt come across in this one as much but as much pink as she wears, her signature colour is actually gold.
