I agree with Magnussen’s method but weren’t you shocked on how she ‘got rid’ of her elderly dog because of a move? I can NOT forget that part of the book and it 100% makes me judge the author.

"Will anyone be happy I kept this?" Wow, that hit me hard. At 65 years old, I have been living like I will live forever. I realized that I have a lot of cleanup to do.

When you said 35 and have already been through several versions of yourself. That resonated with me so much. Thank you for sharing.

I did this some time ago and it was enormously freeing. I could feel the energy around me changing from being stagnant to much more vibrant. But it’s important to be sure of what you are decluttering because you cannot get it back. I find your videos very soothing and restful and your dogs are sweeties!

TY for the lovely video. I recently cycled from long-time minimalism, to cozy and now to curated. I finally purchased a couch and two chairs. Then I added a desk, bookcase and an outdoor chair. After three months, I decided to sell the last three items. I needed the freedom of space. I decided to take off my kitchen doors. I did not want to hide even the few dinnerware items I own. It occurred to me that at 65 yo I embrace my true identity rather than the personality of society. Annie, Metro Detroit

I’m 31 and have done Swedish Death cleaning many times already. The result has been getting rid of the majority of my memory bin, it’s been cathartic. I want my kids remember me for me, not a box of achievements, photographs, and random tokens and tickets. My in-laws joke that we will have a hell of a time dealing with their stuff when they die (even after I gifted them the Swedish Death Cleaning book), and it just makes me sad that they have already given up on letting go of things they don’t even know the origin of. I hope they have a change of heart!

as someone with social anxiety the Sweedish death cleaning mindset ended up being toxic for me. When I got into it the book some years ago I ended up throwing out so many things that were precious to me but that I would be embarrassed by if others had when left behind, like my artwork. I understand it works well for some, but of the de-cluttering methods I tried this really was the most unhealthy approach for me.

The opening immediately pulled me in. My late mother was also raised Buddhist in South Korea before converting to Christianity, and that mindset of non-attachment and peace in the present always stayed with her.

I love how you reframed Swedish Death Cleaning as an act of love for your future self, not preparing for the end. “A tool that no longer serves you becomes weight” was such a powerful line. And seeing you let go of that 20-year-old letter gave me the push to finally face my own sentimental clutter.

Beautifully grounded video. Your ending said it perfectly: our legacy isn’t the stuff we leave behind, it’s how fully and courageously we lived. Your grandma would be proud.

When I went through a divorce I hung onto a ton of things because I had to reduce my lifestyle and thought I wouldn’t be able to afford things in my new life. However, when I moved all that stuff into a small new space it was a disaster. All of a sudden I was in a tiny house full of big fancy furniture that carried with it memories of my old life. I felt like I was living in a mausoleum with all the bad energy from a painful past. I did this for a while then decided to move from Denver to DC. I didn’t want to move all this old furniture so I started giving it away. A solid cherry dining table and chairs to a young couple having a baby. An armoire to a neighbor who was thrilled to have it. An antique secretary to a friend. In the end I just took what was left, custom upholstered chairs, book cases, side tables, lamps outside to my front yard and put up a big sign that read MOVING - FREE. Within 30 minutes everything was gone and I finally felt FREE also.
