  I agree with you on everything. It’s a fluff piece where the plot falls apart if you look at it too closely. Jasmine is fantastic & I loved the Act 2 opening number. It’s also nice to have a family friendly show on Broadway that is not Disney.

  If they were gonna weave a preposterous story about Betty 2025, why couldn't they have made a preposterous story set in 1933, and made it campy and vintagey and reflect on modern pop culture from a different POV?

  It reminded me more of Life-Size, where Tyra Banks is a Barbie stand-in transported to the real world, befriends a little girl, falls in love, learns about feminism and what her image telegraphs, her world can’t exist without her etc

  i saw this one early enough in previews that they were giving everyone balloons as they left the theatre, and there is really nothing quite like being a grown adult walking through times square on a random monday night with a sparkly BOOP! THE MUSICAL balloon. show of the year.

  As an American trying to escape what’s going on these days, it was joyous to sit in the Broadhurst and turn it all off for 2 1/2 hours and be wowed by great performances, visuals, music and dance. Sure the story needed work and your points are well taken, but I sat there and let it wash over me and it was truly a great escape. Especially after having seen the horror show that is Smash the night before.

  I need everyone in the process of writing a musical to run it past Mickey Jo first, even when I haven't seen the show I always think your suggestions sound like much better ideas, more solid plot, and feel like that's the version I wished existed for me to see.

  The "take a classic character and put them in the real world" is such a well worn trope that can pay off if the story is done right. Might be an odd example but I think of the excellent Brady Bunch Movie from the 90s that did an excellent job of using that narrative device to juxtapose the Bradys vs. the 90s and make their wholesomeness as a thing that made them outsiders/weirdos.

  I agree with everything you said about the show yet I still walked out of the theatre with a smile on my face and a tap in my step. Here’s to a little escapism now and then!

  In defense of Boop&apos;s narrative being somewhat lackluster.<br><br>The premise lowkey reminded me of the 1935 short &quot;A language all my own&quot; in which Betty Boop goes to Japan to perform for her fans there. This was in response to the popularity and influence the character had across there at the time, so having a story where she comes to the real world isn&apos;t entirely out of character. Even other Fleischer characters like Koko the Klown and Popeye broke the Fourth Wall occasionally. <br><br>I just think it could have done a lot more with the surreal cartoon elements of the character conflicting with a modern sensibilities of our world imo.
