It’s hard to keep all of the different Marys and Elizabeths straight in my head. Not as bad as a few centuries before when you couldn’t move for Eleanors and Matildas 😅

I love Tracy Borman. She’s one of my favourite British historians alongside Lucy Worsley.

so many women as claimants! any of them becoming queen would've been an interesting change for England

Mary Queen of Scots was slightly unavailable in 1603 to become Queen…

Another informative and expertly delivered video by Dr. Borman! Elizabeth told the Scottish ambassador, early in her reign, that she preferred Mary Stuart's claim and believed it was the strongest, Elizabeth being a big believer in primogeniture. She even considered adopting her young son, James and raising him and educating him in England so he would understand the kingdom he would one day rule. One of the reasons Elizabeth went after Katherine Grey so intensely was to clear a path for a Stewart claimant. Of course, Elizabeth's council and parliament passionately disagreed with Elizabeth about Mary and things would dramatically shift in years to come, but many don't realize that Elizabeth actually supported Mary's claim, early on.

Enjoyed the video, HRP, well done!

James was a descendant of the eldest surviving child of henry VII, margaret tudor, henry VIII older sister, so i think it went to the right person

Mary married her first cousin, her husband Henry stuart also descended from Margaret, so James VI has tudor claim both from his mother and father actually

Monarchy’s aren’t about who deserve or rightfully should have the throne, but who has the power to take it

Borman could have pointed out that even if James's mother was technically disqualified, his father wasn't (he was born in England) and was the next in line anyway.

One of Katherine Grey/Seymour's problems was that she couldn't prove that her secret wedding had, in fact, happened. I like to imagine that Walshingham (or similar) had hidden away some documents to prove that the wedding was actually legitimate, so as to be able to whip them out should Katherine or her son succeeding to the throne seem like the best option. While my imagination firmly believes these documents existed, it is agnostic as to whether or not they were forged.
