At 18 I bought my first rifle. My dad and I planned to go elk hunting in Wyoming one day so we both bought brand new browning rifles in .300 win mag. Unfortunately my dad passed away and we never got to go on our elk hunt. But I still have dad's rifle, and three beautiful sons. One day I'll bring dad's xbolt to the mountains and I'll bag him a big bull elk. Hopefully I make it.

Tim is a national treasure. Most guntubers are young and don't have any experience in the field. The old guys with all the practical knowledge probably don't know how to watch Youtube, let alone post content. Thanks Tim and Kim for keeping it real.

In my Winchester xtr in 300wby 26”barrel with my 180grn Speer Grand Slam I load it to 3100fps. Saves on throat arrorsion and barrel life. The secret is to use a copper solvent and clean after every 10 rnds till your patches come out perfectly clean. I’ve had this gun since they came out in the early 80’s and the throat and rifleing still look brand new with 100rds of rounds through it.

Tim I really like your love of the gun and game. And on a side note kinda glad I didn’t see a 300 PRC

We had the SAME THING happen to us while elk hunting.
We went out the day before season into the Eastern Oregon wilderness about 3 miles, hunkered in the trees for the night.
WE COULD'NT SLEEP!
The elk bugles and antler crashing/clashing kept us up all night.
Before daylight we got one behind the other like two guys in a horse costume and snuck out to a rock outcropping on the edge of the activity.
We had it all planned out how to pick our two bulls and drop them simultaneously. IT WAS GOING TO BE EPIC!!! We were as giddy as two school girls texting at the mall.
About 1/2 hour before daylight...silence....we could just make out elk size figures sneaking away.....a couple of minutes later three flashlights came bopping up the trail. They passed so close to us we could have hit them on the head with our rifle barrels.....and we WANTED TO!!!

I hear more and more on podcasts that the .300 Win Mag was a favorite among JSOC snipers in GWOT.

.300 Weatherby is pretty good for Tennessee elk, as well.

Hunted with 300 H&H most of my life, older model 70, Weaver V9. Wonderful caliber, reloads to near Win mag factory ballistics, and shoots like a dream. Never went without deer and elk meat before I got too old to do it alone. Used Speer grand slams and Nosler partition in 180 grain mostly, both always did the job. Never could afford out of state, or guided hunts. Lucky to farm in eastern Montana. Miss those days.

My family use a weatherby vanguard chambered in 300 WSM. It slays elk with 180 gr handloads. Thank you for everything Tim and Kim.

My ALL-TIME, hands-down FAVORITE class of cartridges!!! I got my first one at 14. My Dad didn't think it was a good idea but he had the exact rifle I wanted, a Ruger 77R in 300 Winchester Magnum and I proved to him my slight size and weight WAS NOT going to stop me. I was buying EVERYTHING with my own EARNED $$ at $2 per hour wage. I wanted a Vanguard 300 Weatherby Magnum but decided the 300 Win. was A LOT MORE cost effective with only 100 fps. less velocity. I'm GLAD I DID! That Ruger was only free floated by my Dad with an air die grinder, that's IT! It will shoot 180 gr. Nosler Partitions, in UN-PREPPED W-W Super brass with Reloader 22 and CCI 250 primers into ONE BULLET HOLE! NOT one hole, ONE BULLET HOLE! 3 shots looks like ONE 338 bullet went through it. .030" groups.
I have SOOO many stories with that rifle it could have it's own documentary but it's shot deer, elk, coyotes, VAPORIZED jackrabbits with 130 gr. Speer hollow points, shot the heads off of grouse and quite a few rock chucks and ground squirrels with 190 grain Hornady boat tails.
I don't know how the barrel has made it this far but I HAVE always been conscious of barrel heat.
The older Ruger barrels seem to have TWO properties: not very high velocities in comparison to other rifles and LONG barrel life.
My Dad's other 77R is a 270 Winchester, it has THOUSANDS of rounds through it and will shoot under 1/2 to this day BUT, it is about 200 fps. slower than it should be.
Even at 14 I was a GUNUT and knew EXACTLY what I wanted and EXACTLY why. At 20 I started working at a gun shop full-time and became a full-time gunsmith at 24 after schooling and an apprenticeship. I have a hundred hunting rifles, many are 300 Magnums, still never had a 300 Weatherby Magnum or a 308 Norma but about all of the others. That experience has taught me that NOTHING has changed. The 300 Magnums are the most versatile calibers extant!
Hint? Put a 200 grain Swift A-Frame in a 300 Winchester Magnum with IMR 7828 powder.....HAMMER OF THOR!

The plain old 300 win mags good enough for any kind of bear and moose, elk or buffalo with good bullets.
My Vanguard absolutely pounds em using 180 gr. Partitions.
