10 Old Quilts in Your Cedar Chest Worth Up to $12,000 (Check Tonight!)

At an estate sale in Brooklyn, an old cedar trunk sold for under fifty dollars. The buyer only wanted the rusty hand tools at the bottom, so he threw the faded, stained blanket resting on top straight onto his back seat to protect the upholstery from dog hair. He had no idea that folded piece of cloth was sewn in 1867, carrying a tiny handwritten block that read: "Master, I am free." When that blanket crossed the auction block at Sotheby’s in New York, the hammer dropped at $264,000—the highest price ever paid for an American quilt at auction. A quilt never looks like money. It doesn’t glint like sterling silver, and it doesn’t carry a maker's stamp like fine porcelain. To most families, it looks like an old chore someone finished a century ago. Because of that, families cut them up for shop rags, leave them on spare beds, or sell them for twenty dollars at yard sales without ever looking twice. In this video, Walter Ashford reveals the 10 vintage quilts hiding in plain sight across American homes, the three physical tests dealers run in under twenty seconds, and the hidden stitches that divide a forty-dollar blanket from a multi-thousand-dollar family heirloom.
