Best to keep random lights on around the house. My house is never dark, even when I sleep.

I never answer the door, unless I know someone is coming over for a visit.

Grear tips!! Even the ones you've scheduled to give you an estimate, on a new roof, water heater, plumbing fix, etc. They will ask: "Is it just you, or is their another decision maker?" Sounds innocent enough, but some of those guys felt shady or desperate. Luckily there are three of us, but I remember that now, after watching this, from when I was single.

And never lead them to the area, room, basement, etc. Point the way. You follow behind. You never let a stranger get behind you. Police training from a few years ago. 😊

When I was a Navy wife, and my husband was gone for long periods at sea, I left some of my husband's clothes, socks, etc. around the living room, so when a worker came in, they would see that there was a man about. I put them out when I left the house as well. Same thing in the bathroom. Two bath towels, toothbrushes, and shaving stuff. We have a security system now, so I can turn on lights and music in various rooms around the house when I'm alone, and the doorbell is answered by the door monitor. If someone comes to your door in the middle of the night, and you don't know them - or if they are trying to enter - just yell, "Honey, get the shotgun." Guaranteed, they will run!

I called my grandma EVERYDAY after work. Twice she’d fallen. We immediately went to her home and found her. I did this for decades after my grampa passed. This was before cell phones. Got her a handheld land line phone she would put in her sweater pocket EVERYTIME she got up.

Another tip, if service workers or anyone who has been in your home, check to make sure windows were not unlocked intentionally.

Great tips! I would add: Close your curtains/blinds at sunset!

Never let the first word you say when you get a call from an unknown number be YES. IT CAN BE RECORDED AND USED FOR AUTHORIZATION TO USE A STOLEN CREDIT CARD.

Some single women keep a cheap ring near the door to slip on the left hand before they open it to a caller. If you speak to a stranger at the door or on the phone, say "we" and not "I" so that you are not telling them you are alone.

A friend's house was broken into while the family was away. My friend, husband and father to 3 little ones, foolishly ran INTO his house to check.
Fortunately, the perp was gone after stealing items. PLEASE don't rush into a broken-into house! CALL the police and let THEM clear the house!
