Even as a South African born in 1960 this is fascinating.

Fascinating railroad history. What a quirk to have elderly New York City subway cars operating with pantographs at ground level in the Bay Area !

Wow! This video is a precious gem. I live near the area of that old Buchanan trestle crossing in Albany -- passing the area on my bicycle almost every day. This video prompted me to explore, and I believe I found some old concrete foundations that still remain -- along a bike path behind the athletic field. My mom grew up in the Berkeley hills during World War II. She recalled undergoing air-raid "black out" drills and "dim out areas" during those war years -- even the street lamps were painted black on the sides facing the ocean. She remembers the only lights you could see during those black-outs were those at the Richmond Shipyard.

It's impressive how much can be done so quickly if actual effort is centrally organized to improve services! Shame its all gone now :(

We lived in apartment eye nine at the shipyard, that train is how we got around for shopping and everything else.

And the interesting thing some may not know about 167, it was actually towed all the way to Perris California on its own wheels. It was equipped with knuckle couplers and air hoses out each end and the Santa Fe towed it all the way down to Perris California

As a docent at WRM, I picked up quite a few tips when talking about these cars. Thank you Mr Smiley.

My grandfather was a foreman building Liberty ships. A photo of he and his crew is on the cover of "Swing Shift" by Joseph Fabry, a book about building the ships in Richmond. Grandma ran the concession stand just out side the gate. My dad came from Texas to be a welder on the ships and met my mom in Richmond. As a baby, I lived in government housing near the Webster Street tube with railroad tracks just outside our unit leading to the Alameda Naval air station. When I was two, we moved to San Leandro.<br>Thanks for the great video!

This video was fascinating to me in that I havem't a particularly indepth knowledge of Bay Area history, having come to California in only 1991. What an incredible connection the Bay Arrea had to the war! This film footage is exceptional , especially when compared to most past-era footage we see today that has been remastered and colorized.
