1997/1998 Shawn Michaels was as close to a Rock-Star as any wrestler will ever be.

You can look at him as a parallel to people like Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain: guys so talented, iconic, enthralling and beautiful. Also…toxic, troubled, volatile, depressed, unpredictable, explosive and drug-driven.

It’s the paradox of being the type of person/performer that everyone is envious of, yet, having such a self-loathing that you can’t enjoy any of your qualities.

I'd go out on a limb and say '97 HBK was more attitude than the entire Attitude Era which some people say started with Austin in '98. Most of the AE storylines were actually quite cartoonish, whereas HBK was getting nuclear heat stemming from real life issues that he brought to light with his smugness.

You just cannot understate how gifted Michaels was. I was a young Canadian growing up and hated Shawn Michaels because I was such a hit man fan. It’s been great to go back and appreciate his greatness of this time.

1:07:39. Shawn Michaels stops abruptly in front of Davey’s leapfrog and pokes him in the eye. In the corner, Stone Cold breaks character and laughs. Best clip from this video. Gold.
