I went to work for an electronics company in 1972. We had a removable disk storage system that held 60mb. We had dozens of LP record size stacks that had 6 platters in each one. Our computer lab was directly above a large room that held an INM 360 mainframe.

Looking at these photos of staff in suites reminds me of the time before computers were glamorous and every youth wanted to work on/with them. As a young newly qualified electronics tech in 1973 in (NZ), me and my compatriots discussed do we stay with our big state broadcasting company (where we were well paid) or go to IBM (which was more well paid). The decision was no on two counts. 1) Computers, being switching devices, were considered to be over glorified telephone exchanges and boring. 2) We did not like the USA corporate "we own you" and you will wear our specified suite/uniform. I guess because in those days, when computers were locked away where the public could not see them, they generated little interest from geeks. However, the PC changed all that when you could have on in your home, tinker with it, program it and get a bit more excited about its possibilities.

I use magnetic drives for long term backups. Incredibly stable technology.

Now Excel can’t even save data without adding errors. Progress!

Believe it or not, the same problem of how many units left in the warehouse has not been resolved yet despite all the computer and IT Revolution.

The hardware was necessary, but the software was needed to be able to organize the data to be found. There were various database software but until relational databases came to be in tne 1980's, it was still hard to find something unless the database was designed to find it.

AI can't even read properly. It reads the links to footnotes.

Actually, computers could read punch cards very fast. Several per second or even more.
