Naoya isn't that generic looking. He honestly looks kinda cool tbh.

Another thing to note about the P1 manga is that they add to Naoya's backstory about him having an older twin brother named Kazuya that died when he was four. He become sort of a reoccurring villain in the story, with his spirit haunting Naoya and also working alongside Aki.

The recent influx of P1 videos brings a smile to my face. It's a pretty great dungeon crawler from that era, I think. Though animations are a bit too long. Looking forward to watching this review.

1:12 I just want to point out that "Megaten" isn't an abbreviation of specifically the Shin Megami Tensei series, it's an abbreviation of "Megami Tensei" as in the series as a whole, which includes Persona.

I'm glad that Persona 1 got covered as it's one of my favorite video games. Yes it's flawed but I tend to love flawed games for some odd reason.

The legacy of first person dungeon crawlers went to Etrian Odyssey, another Atlus IP.
And it seems that with Persona Q (2014) and Q2 (2019) it went full circle back to 1st person view
Edit: to be fair dungeon crawlers have had a bit of success, albeit being a niche genre. For example, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (that got a Switch remake)

It's really cool to finally see more ppl checking out Persona 1, albeit it is a VERY flawed. From the really bad dungeon design to the excruciating random encounter rate, it certainly is a frustrating game to play. Hell, when I played it, I even considered dropping in the back of my mind due to how uninteresting the characters were to me at first and the tedious af gameplay! The only thing that kept me going was honestly my love for the Persona series - given how it's my favorite video game franchise of all time - and just to say "I beat it".

...But my, thank GOD I didn't end up putting this game down permanently because when it gets good, it gets GOOD, imo. The story first off was pretty decent in the beginning and did interest me at least, but then when I got to the 2nd half I was all set to be on this crazy ride! Like it was insane how everything pieced together and I was left impressed by what I experienced. Not only that, I actually started really digging the characters at that time and ended up falling in love with each and every one of them as they did gain bits of development in the story and it was in that 2nd half where you started to learn a bit more about characters like Nanjo and Brown. Some of the subtlety of this game really sells you on the idea of the characters actually developing, it's just not put into the spotlight very much and is reserved for optional dialogue. Brown for example ended up being one of my favorite characters because of I could see his character beginning to shift from his usually portrayal via optional dialogue, and the info dump which is his backstory - although not preferable - adds more layers to his character which caught me in a pleasant surprise.

However, Persona 1 does still boast the weakest story and characters, for sure, especially the characters. The 5th party member system, while a neat idea for creating personal playthroughs, I feel ends up hurting the overall experience since the characters you don't choose just... poof. It doesn't help that the mandatory characters, aside from Maki, don't receive much significant spotlight in the story. Yeah it adds replay value, but personally speaking, I don't find Persona 1 to be as replayable given how frustrating the gameplay already is and the story does admittedly get a bit more slow paced around the middle. The Snow Queen Quest I feel doesn't do much of the characters justice either except maybe Ayase, so the 5th party member system kinda hurts your attachment to these characters which therefore makes them a weaker cast, imo. And don't even get me started on Reiji! Like jesus, how did ANYONE figure out how to get the guy back then?!

Overall, Persona 1 is very rough around the edges, but does have some good in it. It has a certain charm to it that's almost intoxicating and I'm happy to have spent my time with it and grew a love for it. If I had to score the game, I'd give it a 7/10. Great video, btw! You and Kamen make quite the entertaining pair! 👍
