The Marathon is often brought up in this video as one of the best things Humanity had which...I mean is accurate from a certain perspective. It was really only qualifying for that statement when it came to among the best Humanity had in numbers that were actually significant. The Marathon's capabilities were completely eclipsed by the likes of the Valiant Class Super-Heavy Cruiser, Epoch and Orion Class Carriers, and of course the Punic Class Supercarrier. In combat power it sits rather firmly as fifth from the top.

But again, unlike these more potent ships, the UNSC had Marathons to spare. Compared to a handful of these other ships. That is, in truth, the reason the UNSC was seen as so hopeless in space battles. They did have a few ships that were actually very capable of threatening Covenant Capital ships even one on one...the problem is those were the biggest, fewest in number, and most expensive ships the UNSC had and losing even one was seen as a near irreplaceable loss. In the case of the Punic an objectively irreplaceable loss.

Honestly the Punic Class is probably my favorite ship class from the lore of Halo, just because it is such an interesting case. A pre-war ship that via being just so massive, so heavily armored, having so many redundant compartments, and just straight up such a ridiculous armament that it didn't need energy weapons or shielding to compete with Covenant Capital Ships. That, to me at least, is more interesting than every Human ship just getting swept away by more advanced Covenant Ships or the Infinity which essentially invalidated Covenant ships.

The shame is that...very few people even know it exists in the lore. The largest Human Warship before the Infinity. 4,000 meters, an unknown hull thickness that is simply stated to "dwarf" anything else in the UNSC arsenal, two Super MACs as Main Armament, literal hundreds of missile pods (each individual missile pod carrying somewhere between 24-32 missiles), untold hundreds of Point Defense guns, and the ability to carry internal escort Frigates before the Infinity "made it cool" lol.
