"Any society that separates it's warriors from its scholars will have its fighting done by fools and it's thinking done by cowards."

I forget who said this. I'm pretty sure it was a Greek or Roman.

Ive noticed a lot of the mental accuity of so called nerds and intellectuals, who do not pursue physicial prowess, is heavily stunted. They are knowledgeable in one niche singular area but lack the mental ability to think quickly and adapt to changing, chaotic, environments. I wouldnt call that intelligence, but specialization which in itself is fine, but modern society has overvalued that trait.

The problem of the modern civilisation is its atomistic thinking. For the trees we cannot see the forest. Body and spirit are one unit that operates in concert. The ancients understood this concept.
I you train hard, your body will produce more testosteron, you will grow more muscles but also more confidence and your mind will be clear. That will make you more determined, daring, disciplined, entrepreneurial. And vice versa. If you have strong mind and purpose, you will have more discipline to finish difficult tasks. More willingness to train and get physically stronger.

This is a good message for men today. I am neither an engineer nor a professional athlete, but being fully capable of either is important not only for your life, but for the lives your life affects and the society in which you live. Excellence also inspires others you don’t even know…

I'm a 72 year old semi-retired software engineer who has had a lifelong interest in literature, philosophy and many other subjects. In the summer of 1970 I ran 1000 miles in 90 days. A few months later I won my first of two high school state cross country championships -- undefeated over two years. I leveraged that into a full four year athletic scholarship. I used to love going on a ten or fifteen mile run by myself so I could think without distractions.

I've always hated the nerd vs jock dichotomy. I recall in a college Shakespeare class (I started as an English lit major) my professor complained that his son was an athlete and he didn't understand where his son's interest came from and he didn't really approve. The professor also knew I was an athlete which made me a bit squeamish. But I aced his class. Once we had to write a surprise essay on a play on a test in the one hour class. He loved my essay. He made copies, passed them out, and had me read it to the class as an example of what he expected. So at least he didn't hold my athletic side against me.

After college I never stopped running and exercising. I walk more than I run today but I usually put in a combined 4+ miles most days. IMO, a well conditioned body contributes to a solid mental life.

Well stated! True at 20, true at 60. Go hard in the morning. Be mentally strong enough to think independently with courage in an overconformist world.

Paul said, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV
