One of the reasons you might see a bunch of smallish pottery shards is because they ground up old pottery to temper their clay when making new pots/vessels.

Boy, this episode had everything in it: bear tracks, deer tracks, lots of potsherds, flint chert, a hearth, and your winning personality! I love it when you come up on something that surprises you. We can hear it on the video. <br>So a cool Alaska story about bear tracks: I was camped on the beach in a remote spot just off the ocean while deer hunting and fell asleep on the beach. Woke up next morning and they were fresh deer tracks about 15 feet below. My sleeping bag followed by fresh bear tracks about 20 feet below my bag. Apparently the deer had walked through in the middle of the night because those tracks weren’t there the night before, and then the bear followed, and neither of them smelled me or heard me!

I wish I lived by an area not so densely populated. Around Chicago we do have gorgeous nature preserves and wetlands but you're never alone and you can feel the ire of the government everywhere 😢

I appreciate the respect that you give the ground you walk on & the land around you. That makes you a true explorer, like some spelunkers I watch.
