  My great grandfather was lost in a sailing accident during a sudden storm on Lake Michigan. The coast guard found the 2 children who were with him lashed with a rope to the bottom of the capsized boat, waterlogged but alive--my father and uncle. Grandpa was found several days later washed up on the shore. <br><br>The back of his skull was caved in with a powerful blow. Forensics analysis was that the boom of the ship had swung around in the heavy wind and struck him a fatal blow. Nonetheless, he was somehow able to remain conscious long enough after the ship capsized to save the two boys and secure them on The still above water portion of the ship before he succumbed to the deep.<br><br>Lake Michigan is every bit as deadly as any ocean.

  I&apos;ve been told the Great Lakes are more like the North Sea than a Lake by an old WW2 vet

  I&apos;ve always lived in Michigan and as a boater and fisherman, I&apos;ve had my own brushes with the dangers of the Great Lakes. They are definitely not just lakes. They&apos;re so large that they influence the weather, and when you&apos;re out on them, the waves and wind can increase rapidly. I&apos;ve been caught off guard a few times myself.

  People often underestimate the Great Lakes by thinking they&apos;re &quot;just a lake&quot; but these aren&apos;t your typical lakes.

  Lake Superior is the one that normally has the bad reputation, specifically the Native American legends and all the shipwrecks.<br>I was once on a beach in Petosky, Michigan as a regular thunderstorm was suddenly supercharged by Lake Michigan into something very powerful. It was not in the forecast and it was truly terrifying to be caught as it made landfall with only a car for cover.

  I live in Michigan! A lot of people don’t understand how incredibly huge the Great Lakes are, they can be extremely dangerous in certain conditions.

  I grew up on Lake Michigan (Holland) and I witnessed the lights in 1994 that showed up on radar. What a lot of people don&apos;t know is that a lot of us on the lake saw odd lights that whole summer following the famous sighting. Last time I saw what appeared to be a craft over the lake was in 2011. We moved after that. There is definitely something happening with that lake. A lot of locals, myself included, think something is harvesting the fresh water.

  Hey, I&apos;m an Illinois resident. Loved seeing a video about Lake Michigan like this. Everyone always take about Lake Superior&apos;s reputation so this was very refreshing.
