  good sound selection is the most important thing i learned in sound engineering college. if you find yourself needing to use any extreme eq or sidechaining to make sounds fit together then something needs to be removed or swapped. i find if i've got a great groove going and it's sounding muddy after some basic eq then the best thing to do is start removing channels one by one. usually you'll find everything becomes a lot clearer and more powerful when you've removed the offending sound which might be great on its own but doesn't work in the mix. choose what the star of the show is and treat your other elements as support

  OH MY GOD! The “training wheels” concept is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for! I’m a newer producer, so anytime I look for help I often see the “music has no rules” cliché and it can be frustrating at time. Thank you so much!
