Although we couldn't see the full moon because it rained in Daejeon, I hope you had a holiday filled with warmth, both physically and mentally, through fellowship and sharing. Every year during the Month of Martyrs, I have shared stories about martyrs, but since I was unable to do so this year, I would like to speak about the martyr saints today, on the last Sunday of the Month of Martyrs. First, let us examine today's message. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to the chief priests and elders. A certain man had two sons. He went to the older son and said, "Son, go to the vineyard today and work." He answered, "I will not," but later changed his mind and went to work. Meanwhile, the younger son answered his father's words, "I will go, Father," but did not go. The original text reads, "Yes, Lord." Calling his father "Lord" brings to mind the words of Matthew 7: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven." While the older son changed his mind and went to work, this expression does not appear for the younger son. The second son did not change his mind; he merely gave that answer without any intention of going to work from the beginning. Jesus asks the chief priests and elders, “Which of the two has done the Father’s will?” The answer is all too obvious. When they answer, “The firstborn son,” Jesus says, “The tax collectors and prostitutes are the ones who appeared disobedient but were actually obedient. It is you who are disobedient while pretending to obey.” They must have felt deeply insulted that He had used those they despised the most as a point of comparison. Meanwhile, the First Reading is from the Book of Ezekiel. The Israelites, who were in exile in Babylon, were grumbling that the Lord’s way was unfair, claiming that God had punished them for the sins of their ancestors. To this, God says, “Do you say that My way is unfair? Rather, isn’t your way unfair?” God tells them that ‘it is not the sins of the ancestors, but the actions you take today that will determine your future.’ The second son did not change his mind; he simply gave that answer. In the Second Reading, the Apostle Paul explains what makes true practice and obedience possible. “Keep in yourselves the same mind that Christ Jesus had. … Jesus humbled himself and became obedient to death—to death on the cross.” Today’s message emphasizes that true faith is revealed not through words, but through a life of obedience to the Father’s will and a life of practice. I briefly attended university before entering seminary, and not long ago, I met a friend who was my classmate. It had been 37 years. He told me that while his wife and children are all believers, he alone has not yet been baptized, and that he would definitely get baptized soon. He said that he had thoroughly investigated all religions and concluded that the Korean Catholic Church is the purest and most righteous religion among all those in Korea. Worried that he might be disappointed later, I said, “That’s not true in every respect,” but he replied, “Compared to other religions, those minor flaws are nothing.” As we talked, I found myself discussing the shortcomings of the church, while my non-believer friend was praising the Korean Catholic Church. What could have led my non-believer to such an impression? In fact, rather than asking "what," we should ask "who." It is the martyrs. A professor specializing in Korean philosophy uses the expression that almost every religion introduced to our country has "received the baptism of shamanism." This implies that the aspect of seeking material blessings has become excessively strong, regardless of their original doctrines. Seeking blessings in this world—"faith seeking material blessings"—is not inherently bad. However, if one focuses solely on "what I will gain through faith" rather than "what kind of person I should become through faith," religion is prone to losing its original meaning. In the Gospel, we see the manifestation of this misguided faith seeking material blessings in the prodigal son who merely pays lip service to his father's will without doing so, and in the Israelites in the First Reading who complained that their suffering was God's fault. The professor mentioned that while almost every religion introduced to our country had become focused on seeking material blessings, Catholicism was the least affected by this influence, and he stated that he was currently researching the reasons for this. I immediately replied, “It is thanks to the martyrs.” How co...
