Traditional Sailing Boat Prawn Fishing in Sri Lanka Life of Negombo Muslim Fishermen Sri Lanka Fishing Documentary The Muslim fishing community in Poruthota, Negombo, is a significant part of the region's diverse maritime culture, specializing in traditional sailing and prawn (shrimp) catching. These fishermen primarily operate from the Poruthota Lelama, a vibrant local hub where daily life revolves around the tides and the seasonal migration of shrimp. Fishing Techniques & Traditions The community is known for preserving age-old techniques that rely on nature rather than modern heavy machinery: The Oruwa (Outrigger Canoe): This iconic traditional sailing vessel, equipped with a large rectangular sail, is used to navigate both the Negombo Lagoon and the open ocean. Prawn & Shrimp Catching: Fishermen use specialized netting techniques to catch prawns, a local delicacy and a major export for the region. Night & Dawn Fishing: Much of the shrimp catching occurs during the late night or early morning hours (typically starting around 5:30 AM), when shrimp are most active and can be easily guided into nets. Traditional Trawling: Artisanal shrimp trawling is common in these coastal waters, though it is carefully managed to balance the catch with environmental sustainability. Key Locations Poruthota Lelama: A bustling fish market and harbor located at the northern end of Negombo’s coastal stretch. It serves as the primary landing site for the catch of the local Muslim community. Negombo Lagoon: A vital ecosystem where traditional fishermen use smaller canoes and "teppemas" (log rafts) to harvest lagoon prawns. Poruthota Beach: A quieter area compared to the main tourist beaches, where you can often see the colorful "oruvas" lined up on the shore. Cultural Significance The Muslim fishermen of Poruthota often share their heritage through guided experiences. Visitors can join them on Traditional Catamaran Tours to learn how to launch sails and participate in net fishing for prawns. The Poruthota Lelama is also an excellent place to witness the traditional auctioning process, where fresh seafood is sold to the highest bidder in a fast-paced, rhythmic ritual. #prawnfishing #shrimpfishing #MuslimFishermen #seafood #traditionalfishing #fishingvillageboy #sailingboat Amazing Prawn Catching sailing Adventure ...
