Honestly the most interesting thing about battle city isn't the cardpool (I'm not gonna complain about links or synchros, by all means use them) it's the ruleset. If Konami had taken their cues from Kazuki Takahashi, the game would have never imploded to begin with; there were significant safeguards built in.

0) Players each have 4000 lifepoints (obviously)
1) Monsters cannot attack the turn they're special summoned (Takahashi understood the importance of summoning sickness in MTG. The Winged Dragon of Ra's revival effect of Quick Attacking is directly built to be a big deal because of this forgotten but very important rule)
2) extra deck monsters count as tributes equal to the sum of their materials for tribute summons
3) 10-star monsters and up required 3 tributes (this is kind of whatever but it feels fair)
4) monsters can be normal summoned in face-up defense position
4) Each player can only set 1 spell/trap per turn
5) All spell cards are spell-speed 2 activations
6) cards that are destroyed cannot have their effects resolve on the field (MST negates, functionally, but trap hole would too)
7) When a monster changes control on the field and is send to the graveyard/banished/returned to hand/deck, it is send to the controller's graveyard/banish/hand/deck instead of the original owner's. (So if you were to brain control someone's 'Sangan' and then tribute it, you would get the search instead of your opponent)
8) When an attack target is removed from the field after attack declaration there is no replay (so if a monster were to attack another, and the target was saved by 'Interdimensional Matter Transporter', the attacker would not get to then attack another monster or the player directly instead, the attack simply whiffs and does nothing)
9) If a monster is special summoned after attack declaration, the player who summoned it can force it to become the attack target instead (summoning to block)
10) Fusion materials are not sent to the graveyard, they hang in limbo with the fusion monster itself (would this also apply to synchro material monsters? Link materials? Ritual tributes? idk. This is true for Duelist Kingdom as well)

Manga Specific (and so still in line with specifically Takahashi's design)
1) Each player can only control up to 5 cards on the field at once, including both monsters and spell/traps (there's only 5 zones on a duel disk as drawn, lol, the show added a backrow to slide under the front)
2) Monsters cannot be set

3) Each player can only activate one 1 spell from their hand each turn

What restrictions existed on the card pool were:
1) Spells that directly destroy enemy monsters are banned
2) Spells (cards?) that deal effect damage to enemy lifepoints are banned

Lots of cards have different effects/functionality from the OCG/TCG as well (obvious) but that's separate from all of this. Most notable examples are the Egyptian Gods, ofc, but also just stuff like "blue-eyes ultimate dragon can attack 3 times" (and can maybe survive being destroyed up to three times, losing one of its attacks and sending a blue-eyes to the grave each time...? I wish Konami had originally designed fusion monsters like Xyz monsters where materials were stacked underneath and detaching had some functionality... that's ostensibly how they were supposed to be originally...

These rules were built off of and evolved from the original Duel Disk rules from Yugi and Kaiba's duel in Duelist Kingdom, which differ significantly from those of Duelist Kingdom itself, (such as only being able to control one monster at a time).

Duelist Kingdom itself actually has a really interesting (and genuinely not bullshit) rule set itself too, which involved things like a player taking damage equal to half the attack of a monster they owned when destroyed by card effect—something that punishes players for just playing big monsters without thinking about it badly when there's only 2,000 LP. I think it's really worth trying them out! Bring modern meta decks to it if you want even, see how they function, and how you naturally gravitate towards modifying those decks under these rulesets. It wouldn't be quite right to say that Yugioh has evolved because, honestly, Konami has absolutely never put these rules into play under any circumstances, and I think Kazuki Takahashi as a fan of a great many games, and drawing on MTG, actually had more insight and awareness than what actually ended up being implemented. Turbo duels were only ever implemented by Konami in the 5Ds Nintendo DS games too, and honestly that might be the best game mode they've ever done, yet NEVER hit physical/mainstream dueling. Turbo spells being limited by speed counters as a resource is actually so healthy for the game, lol. (Again, it's the kind of thing that sounds inspired by MTG)

Seriously. Try them out, you'll have fun, lol. (Obviously you can't actually do this on Master Duel, though, unfortunately)
